Engine Died

smoke(unburned fuel right)? when I let it idle down to normal 850 rpm it would die. I did this several times taking care not to crank to long each time. Finally I removed the filter, filled it, reinstalled it and proceeded to try and restart,again it cranked over and over and finally i got a spark of life from it,it spit and sputtered but finally started and ran fine after that. Can anyone atempt to explain what might have happened to cause this problem other then me trying to drain the water out. The new filter is about a foot above and 18" from the stock filter mounted to the fire wall on the drivers side. Thanks in advance.

Bill,every water trap drain that I've ever dealt with,including Cummins,has said not to drain with the engine running. You just sucked up air and had to run it out. If you open the drain and nothing comes out just push the manual pump on the transfer pump. If it is hard to push or doesn't pump it's because the the pump lobe is fully depressed by the cam,just hit the start for an instant to move the cam position.

Sounds like you put the new filter before the lift pump (suction side). I would put it between the lift pump and the origional filter (pumps' pressure side), that way the pump does not have to suck thru the filters' restriction. That should eliminate your hard re-start problem.

Bill before I installed the pre filter I used to drain water from the primary fuel filter with the engine running and never had a proplem like this,but I understand about succing air through the filter and agree with you. ???

CPFF,The reason I put the filter before the lift pump prefilter-heater is,so all the garbade in the fuel,if any, will be caught by this filter and it is much easyer to change,and I can change the stock and pre-filter every 50,000 miles,am I headed for a problem doing what I did???

If the prefilter was below the fuel level in the tank you might get away with it. But it seems to me that above it like that can create a real priming problem. If it was after the lift pump then the pump would still be self priming so there should not be a problem.

If you can move your prefilter down to the frame it would work better, should not hurt to have it before the lift pump but having it so high if there is a leak or you try to drain water you can get air in the fuel system, do not drain this filter with engine running as long as you have it pre-lift pump. You just pumped a lot of air through your injection system. The engine does not run well that way!!!!

Joe,the fact that the new filter is above the level of the fuel tank never entered my mind,all I was thinking of was easy replacement,point well taken.


KBOOU,I understand what ya'all are saying and will try to find a safe location that is on the same plain as the lift pump and fuel tank.
This is my first diesel ever owend, new since
95 and am still learning,I guess the hard way. You can bet I will never do that again.

Hey Mr. B I'm still learning too, been around diesel for a long time, used to ride submarines, had big honking diesels on them, no mater what size they are I love em, nuthin like the rumble of a diesel makin power!!
