My dad called tonight and said his truck just quit running while going down the road. I asked if he was out of diesel, he said no. What could be wrong? He will check the fuel filter in the morning. My experience is these engines are are quit easy to work on. Sounds like the truck is not getting fuel to me. Your thoughts? It is the '00.

Red Goat, sounds like a dead lift pump to me.

Here's an easy way to check it: Open up the water drain valve on the filter canister, put a container under the drain hose, then bump the starter a couple times (do not start engine). You should hear the lift pump run. If fuel flows fairly rapidly into the container then your fuel delivery is OK; if not then the transfer pump is DOA.

Good luck with your dad's truck.

Red Goat,

My truck did the same thing this past Sunday night and it ended up being the infamus VP44 that took a dump. It set a P1688 code that could only be seen with the DRB III scan tool. Have you done a check for error codes by turning the key on three times? When I did that it showed a P0500 and a P1693, both had nothing to do with the VP44.

Thanks Vaughn. Question, he would still be able to hear the pump motor run just not getting any pressure. Maybe this will get him to get a set of gauges.

For some reason ,the 00 VP44s seem to be the best ones, A freind and I were just talking about that this weekend. Mine and several others seem to go forever. The 98-99,and 01-02s seem to have problems a lot more frequently. Id be interested to see if its a bad VP.

Had the same thing happen to my 99, about 3 months ago, driving down the interstate, and suddenly nothing, PV44 was the reason. Good luck.

How many miles were on your pump when it took a dump?

Dads truck

Here is what I have found out. It is not the lift pump, but dad is still getting some fuel to the injectors. So is this a dead VP or something else?

Thanks for the help

Curtis

He can get fuel out of the drain. He emptied it put a new filter in and filled it again. I have only been talking to him on the phone, I wish I was there. Is there a way to get fuel past the VP with the lift pump. I am down to the VP or something is wrong with the injectors.

As another note Dad has farmed all his life and has worked on many tractors, so I think he has the mechanical knowledge to work on the truck. At least the mechanical parts, maybe not the electrical stuff like setting the radio stations or time on the radio :) .

Maybe that is just him being stubborn.

The truck was bought used about 2-3 months ago. He is not truck poor, but this is one of the trucks he feeds cattle with. He does have a problem getting rid of trucks.
