Engine difference: 2010-2012 cummins 3500 vs 5500

We have a dodge cab chassis 5500 cummins that we blew the motor on. We were hoping and wondering if a 2500-3500 6.7 cummins motor would work seems how they are cheaper and more available. What would we need to do to make it work. The truck doesn't have anymore epa goodies if you know what I mean. Idk if that makes a difference.
