How loud is everyone's fan?

I have never heard my fan engage. It must as my temps are always as they should, but people tell me how loud they are, but not mine?? My dad's 06 kicks on often as well, thou I haven't ridden in his truck for a few years to recall the sound.

I don't have any codes, and I know the ECM monitors the fan speed and will throw a code if the speed is low. . but I still never hear it.

I hear mine and it is very loud. We have had some really hot weather here past few days and my fan has been kicking on very often and it is very audible.

I made an appt for tomorrow. . I have never had a temp issue, but might as well check it out.

I have read posts about grabing and stopping the fan at idle. I tried my this weekend when changing the oil, filters, and fuel filter. I could not stop mine. Not sure if that is a good gage but it tells me everything is ok!

From the Dodge Service Manual:

"The ECM controls the level of engagement of the electronically controlled fan clutch by monitoring the coolant temperature, intake air temperature, and A/C status. Based on cooling requirements, the ECM sends a signal to the viscous fan clutch to increase or decrease the fan speed. Fan speed is monitored by the ECM. Lack of fan speed will set a DTC. Fan speed and duty cycle can be monitored by the DRBIII. "

I have read that, which is why I have never presumed I have an issue... But I never hear it, so I am still going to have it looked at.

It Sounds Like a GE90-115B Turbo Fan Engine

The sound they make is the large volume of air moving through front of the condensor through the intercooler and radiator. When the moon, sun and all the stars line up and my AC is on mine sounds like a GE90-115B Turbo Fan engine at max power. They are really loud and can be heard through my fully sound insulated cab. :)

So I did the at home test, I can easily stop it with the a/c on or off at idle. . So off to Dodge I go, turns out the clutch isn't covered under the 7/70 or 7/100. . But the service writer has a 06, so we walk out to his truck, can't stop the fan at idle, but the tech says a/c won't effect it at idle. .

So now I am stumped, and head over to Big Twin Diesel to as Pat if he has a scan tool that can see fan rpms and actuate the fan clutch and all appears to be working well, and even at 99% fan engagement and 2300 rpms the fan isn't very loud, barely an audible change over the fan at 0%. So my fan works as advertised.

So then we started wondering why my dad can hear his, and I couldn't stop the fan on the other 06. Pat then remembered that the 06's (and 05's with the proper flash) will command the fan to operate if the auto trans temp is high enough, and it was an auto and he had just been driving and it was over 80* out. Then we figured my dads was louder due to the G56 OD ratio, smaller tires, and he has stock intake/exhaust, and when I am in the engine temp where the fan should come on the intake/exhaust are making a little noise, not loud but enough to muffle noise.

It also felt and looked like the 06 fan blades were a little different in shape than my 05, but not 100% sure. . But looking at the responses the guys who say its super loud have 06+ trucks. . Just a speculation, could be wrong. .

Bottom line is my fan appears to be working as advertised, just not as loud as I expected.

That might be the case that the 06+ rigs are louder than the 05. I know mine is loud as even my wife and kids notices it when the fan engage and start moving air.

I thought the fan on my '04 wasn't working right either. I guess it just wasn't warm enough out yet. When doing some crawling in the woods recently, it finally came on very briefly. The noise was not overly obnoxious. As the weather warms up I seem to notice it more often. I don't tow anything heavy. The temp gauge is always right near the 200F mark.

Ah, if everything is running ok and you're not running hot you should be ok why worry. If your fan wasn't operating properly I think your temps would be well into the 210 215 range when they shouldn't be. My 06 is a manual and I can still hear my fan kick on and very often in hot weather.

Fan on my 04 (5600) engages every time I stop(eg. traffic light) in warm weather with a/c on. Stays engaged until about 5th gear on take off , then will not hear it again until next stop unless towing on a grade. fan is quite noisey . Its the one thing that really irritates me when driving in city traffic light to light the fan is on all the time. Makes me wish it were electric, variable speed. !

Oddly, allot of this was discussed in another post about "normal" temps while towing. Your 05's fan is engaged when you turn on the AC, and when the AC isnt on it comes on based on load requirement from the ECM/PCM.

Try this!, Since we pretty much have the same truck roll down both the drivers and passenger side windows. Drive the truck using a 1st thru 4Th and wind it out pretty good with the AC off, then with the AC on. With the AC on the Fan will be noticeably audible, mine is.

For what it's worth I went through all this the first summer I had the 05.

Hmmm... .

It was my understanding that the fan cycling with the AC was part of the most current software "flash"?? And my 04. 5 does this since installing the Smarty Jr with its updated software.

Mine can only be heard outside, and if your listening for it... but it does move a lot of air when it engages.
