I have done some searching of this question, but haven't found it addressed, so I'll ask it. I will be killing my timing case dowel pin in the near future and have checked into the parts necessary to do the job. I will want to replace the crankshaft front seal. The seal kit is available from Cummins with or without a repair sleeve. Repair sleeves seem to be pretty expensive items, driving the price up about $38 if I remember correctly, and I don't want to buy one if I don't need it. Sometimes I have been able to avoid needing a repair sleeve in other instances by installing the new seal in a different location so that the lip(s) contacted new surfaces instead of the ones worn by the old seal. Is this practical in this case? Any insight from this excellent group would be much appreciated.

Clark,

I would first check and see if you even need the sleeve. I have done a few, and neither needed one. Yes, you can move the seal back about 1/16" and put it on a different section of the crankshaft end, basically putting the lip of the seal on a "new" section of surface, bypassing the need for the repair sleeve.

Good luck.

Don't buy the repair sleeve, the teflon laydown lip seals are very good at sealing even shafts that look very bad. When you look at the crank there will likely be two areas that are worn, there will be a groove cut towards the nose that is caused by the dust seal part of the front crank seal. The area on the crank where the oil seal rides will have a little wear, it wont be as bad of a cut and will be more radiused. Just clean or polish it up with a bit of scotch brite and it will be fine most likely. Make sure the crank is clean and dry when you put the seal on. I like #2 permatex on the outer circumfrence of the seal.

I've seen more leaks by repair sleeves that were put on incorrectly and had a little wow in them then just using the standard seal.

Thanks for your replies! You have answered the question. I'll get the kit without the sleeve. This community is a great resource!
