Not my RAM, but 02 Liberty got hot and boiled out some antifreeze. Let it cool down and it returned to normal temp? I will fill the collant, but what gives? Sticking thermostat, radiator cap???? Help. . I was driving slowly in the hills... Doc
If you had a low water condition before this started this is the cause... and you might be just fine... .
I can only assume that you don't know the condition of the cooling system before this happened... .
On some of these engines you need to open a port and burp out the excess air for the system to be full and function correctly... my wife's Intrepid is that way and to be honest I don't have a clue about my 05 Jeep Hemi.....
I'd try and overheat it... and if I can't I'd assume that I had some leak and would pressure test the system and repair...
It seems that I only look under the hood now when we change the oil..... but since I travel a lot and have several work trucks I've trained my guys to look under the vehicle every time they walk up to it after its been sitting... . and of course a good inspection when the oil is changed... .
I had an overheat a couple of times with the wife's Jetta TDI until we figured it out.
The stock plastic waterpump impeller had broken loose from it's shaft and thus was not pumping coolant thru the engine. It wasn't easy to find and definately not the first thing anyone would check. At 70K miles we never suspected that. Found it by disconnecting hoses to see if it was pumping and it wasn't. (At least we also changed the timing belt while we were in there).
If you end up scratching your head you might consider this.
Does the Liberty have an electric fan?... You might make sure that the fan is coming on when its suppose to. Its been my experience w/ electric fan motors that they tend to slow down and loose efficiency (draw less air across cooler) long before they actually fail.
