Hey guys I was driving today and I heard a chime and I look down and the light check gauges was on and I wasnt showing any oil pressure, so I turned the truck off asap and pulled over and I checked the oil and no oil loss and no oil leaking. So I drove it to a friends close by and I checked all the fuses and I pulled the connector off the oil pressure switch and it was fine and the I started the truck and I got oil pressue and on the way home it would drop to zero and then come back up it only dropped once what do you guys think? I running amsoil oil filter if that helps and I believe it has a bypass valve any input would be great!

I had that happen too

Happened to me with 5k or so on the rig. I happened to be 1 mi. away from a stealer and it was a bad sending unit.

Take a deep breath and relax....

Well sort of ;) The good news is it's 99% probability it's just the oil sender.

The bad news is they want an arm and a leg for the stinkin' things and no, they aren't available aftermarket for the 24v engines.

Had the same thing happen in my '97 V10 - it was the sending unit. You can image I went into "heart attack" mode when that guage dropped to "0" at 55 mph!:--)

Check out TSB for 2001

Your trouble could be a sending unit, but it could also be a soft ware problem in the ECM. Check the TSB under 2001 engine related problems. Hope this helps.

Wayne.

I bought a brand new 01 a year and a half ago. right off the lot, 25 miles latter oil pressure drop to O. took it right back. bad sending unit. must be common with 01s.

There is a TSB for this. Involves a reflash so the ECM reads the sending unit signal and possibly the sending unit. Should covered with the 5yr/100k warranty.

Don't let the dealer reflash your truck

Buy the oil pressure sending unit. If the engine is running, it will have oil pressure, trust me. If you have the reflash done to your ecm, it does not fix the problem. All the reflash does is make your oil press gage stay at a constant good pressure. This is bad if you ever loose pressure, the gage will never move off showing good pressure.

The problem is the oil sender, so instead of chrysler fixing the problem, they just put a band-aid on the problem by not allowing the computer to read the actual oil pressure.

Hey guys just picked it up from the dealer and it was the oil sending unit so its fixed but whats wierd is they said the oil sending unit wasnt covered under cummins warranty and it was under the emissions what does an oil sending unit have to do with emissions im just curious what your views are!

Same thing happened on the way home after I picked up the truck in 1999. I had it towed (put on a flatbed), and brought to the closest dealer who replaced the oil sending unit. (The oil pressure was fine):D

My unit has worked intermittently for years. I asked my mechanic, when it first happened, and he said that someone ,competent enough, would hear the engine change tone if there was no oil pressure. He suggested I not let my wife drive it for a week or so to let me iron out the problem because she wasnt too bright(read "too incompetent to hear the bearings seizing). As I remeber whiteknights grandpappy heard the engine tone change before the failure. Maybe Im deluded but I recall reading that.

Well mine just went out on the way to work this morning, gave me a heart attack. I just checked the oil last night because we're going on a short trip tomorrow. I checked it again when I got to work, full. So at 43,000 miles it's not warrantied? How much to fix it? I like the check gage light... . good idea, first time I've seen it.
