Yes, I know it would have been smart to start it now and again, but I didn't. I still have some time (maybe 6 months?) before I can transplant the engine of my 2005 (which hasn't been started) to my 1994. Would it be a good idea to take the injectors out (I've done this 2-3 times) and spray or pour some (for instance) type of oil in there? I could start it, but you can't really warm them up when they are idling, can you? To start it I would have to get some diesel (tank is empty) and a couple of batteries.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Pull all 3 injector plugs so that it won't fire, like DFitzwater said.

Make sure it has new oil, and go!!

yep.. if you wanted to get really creative you could pressurize the oiling system with a prelube tank and attach to the port ontop of the oil filter. rotate the crankshaft several times while you prelube...
All that being said.. I'd probably just do waht others have suggested, disable injection and spin it over several times, then light it. Once I saw oil pressure come up I'd probably raise the idle speed to 1000-1200 rpm and hold it there for several minutes. The increased speed helps to get oil to the components that only get splash lubrication.

I agree with wingate, but I'll add I might be tempted to pull the valve cover and tap the rockers with a plastic mallet just to make sure no valves are stuck. While it was off I'd pour a quart of oil over the rockers.

3 years is a long time. I would personally pull the injectors and use fogging oil in the cylinders and let them soak for a bit, concern would be the ring / cylinder wall rusting that could damage either. No guarantee that this would mitigate the rust damage, but would help. I would also pull the intake boot from the turbo and rotate by hand to ensure the bearing has not seized. A new fuel filter with seafoam added to the housing for cleaning the injectors on first start, along with the oil and filter change would be the way I would go..

Had a IH 504 tractor sit for over 12 years without a start. Gave it to my grandson, told him how to start it (I wasn't there). He ask me later how long it had sat, he said it started as if it was started yesterday. I was shocked.
