Just wondering what brands/types of engine hoist others are using (I currently have none). Anyone make their own? Seems to me they're pretty simple and for a few hundred dollars worth of steel and some time invested you could build one exceptionally strong.

don't buy a cheap one. Yup, you can make your own pretty easy and stronger than most cheap units. BTW, are you on the hobart forum?

Wow that was scary. I have a [gulp] Harbor Freight 2 ton unit, pretty much the same as the one in that link, only orange:cool:. I pulled a 90 6BT with transmission attached with no problems. It actually held it suspended in the air 7 feet high for a few hours when I hurt my back and had to go inside:mad::-laf. Cost about ~$199. I had a quite a few members JDonnelly included, that said they used this same hoist with no problems back when I was looking for one.

if i ever get to needing an engine hoist, i think i am making one [yet another excuse to prepurchase the tig/stick welder i am eyeing ;)]... it won't be as fancy like that one since it probably will not fold up, but it will have an I beam boom [4"x4" 3/8"-1/2" web] and spots on the back to counterweight it and a support chain up top. . long travel cylinder and a pneumatic pump for it. . it'll cost the same or a little more, and weigh about 4x as much

thanks, I tend to live at the millermotorsports forum, but is visit the hobart one too. I'd love to see a cross section cut done on that hoist. I am thinking that more than likely, there was an issue with the steel and not the design. Still, if it falls on your toe, it doesn't really matter what went wrong, because something still 'went wrong. '

I pull a motor out once every two years or so...

So, yep! I've got the orange Harbor Freight. It's pretty nice, especially for the $$s. If I was going to use it a couple of times a year, I might could justify something better. Since I don't, the HF unit does everything I need, and the footprint when stored is only about 2'x4'.

Like anything else in the shop, the amount of use has a major impact on the quality I buy. I only do hobby stuff so I never can cost justify even a light bulb (but I do use T8 electronic ballast only :) )
