Engine kill on backup

My friend has a 97 4x4 with an auto transmission. Many times when he puts his truck in reverse, the engine will die. Do any of you have any ideas on what this may be? Is is a problem some of the 12 valve engines have, or could it be something simple like a vacuum line somewhere? Thanks

Have him check his low idle speed.

It should be 700 to 850 rpm in drive with AC on.

Same problem I had especially towing-stalled both in reverse and drive at slow speeds jockeying around the campgrounds. It was the idle which I have adjusted up to 900 in gear and alls well.

Great, I will check that, could one of you guys give me a quick walk through on how to adjust the idle speed? I don't imagine it would be very difficult, but I am not sure where to start on that one. Thanks a bunch... Brandon
