Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) engine light on

Coming home last nite the check engine light come on,pulled over and checked al fluids ect. fine, seem to run alright to get her but when i slowed for the stop sign in began surging(engine rpm up and down) but seems to stop if i slip it into neutral?? have not got to look at it yet this morn, more fine engineering I,m sure. Thanks for any insight anyone can give!!

The first thing to do is to check for stored DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes). Depending on the year of your truck, you may be able to do this by turning the ignition key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (leave on) and immediately watch the odometer window. Write down any codes you see and report them back here for additional help.

If the ignition key trick doesn't work, you'll need an OBDII code reader. Many auto part stores will have one you can borrow, or of course buy.
