COLUMBUS, Ind. — Cummins (CMI), a manufacturer of diesel and natural-gas engines, will cut 2,000 employees, about 4% of its global workforce, by the end of the year. The culprit: weakening sales of engines and power generators around the world and no assurances that sales will pick up soon.
Typically, actions at Cummins are slightly behind those at construction giant Caterpillar. Cat addressed the worldwide slowdown several months ago. Some of our friends at Cummins tell me that the US economy is still good. Also, there are consolidations happening within Cummins that will coincide with the job cuts.
