Repeated problems with engine missing, hard to start, intermitent excessive smoke, loss of power, fuel mileage down 10%, etc. To make a really long story short found and corrected the following:

1) Suction and return hoses replaced - found to be deteriorated and leaking air on suction side. Replaced hoses and hose clamps.

2) Fuel Tank Module Suction fitting on tope of the tank module - cracked. Fuel pickup (suction) line where it attaches to the top of the fuel suction module was loose and leaking air. Replaced the following: Module: F/Pump Assy (Chrysler Part Number 52018309) and Valve: Fuel Tank Press and Rollover; & Grommet for valve (Chrysler part number 4279941 & 4002149). (Note that the replacement of these componets requires removal of the fuel tank from the truck. )

Truck now starts, runs and acts like a new unit - fuel mileage has also been restored.

In summary, for these older trucks that have seen a 'few years and miles' this fuel tank module may be a contributor to a lot of the fuel related performance problems notes on this forum.

Call or PM is you have specific questions.

Repeated problems with engine missing, hard to start

Yes I would imagine it would be with the engine missing. :-laf :-laf :-laf

Sorry couldn't resist.

Good post though.

These parts get forgotten in the search for improved MPGs. I have access to a shop this week- I may look at my truck and see how all of it is. Having a flatbed means easier access. Maybe I can get away without rebuilding the pump for a while.

In addition,, even though the hoses above the tank may not be allowing air in the system, What I found a few years back was the "kink" in the hoses above the tank after being more than 10yrs old would colapse and restrict fuel flow.

Although my engine would not quit running,, on a hard sustained pull it would starve for fuel.

Crawled up under the fender, changed the hoses and now she runs good.

I think I may have a problem with that "kink". There is a 90 molded into the plastic where the line may be restrictive. What hose (part number/supplier/ID/OD) did you replace the factory suction line with? Did you just slide it on the tank pickup and clamp it?

I used regular flexible diesel hose for both suction and return. We had some around the shop but I am sure it most likely came from NAPA originally. I don't remember the inside dia. Yes,, just clamped them on.

My more agile and younger friend did it for me by crawling up under the fender. Only took about 10 mins.

Godo luck,, you will be pleased at the results I bet!
