Attention: TDR Forum Junkies My truck has developed a very loud 'ticking' nosie. The noise started near Augusta, GA while towing a 16 trailer. We are moving from Goose Creek, SC to Roswell, NM.
The noise started about 3-4 hours out of Goose Creek, SC near the city limits of Augusta, GA. We were on I-20. My wife and I looked at each other and commeted that something was wrong and took the first exit, which was about 4-5 miles. We happened upon a DC dealership at the exit. One of the mechanics looked at truck, listened, etc for about 30-40 minutes and could find nothing abnormal. All guage readings were normal. Our GCVW(scaled) was 17,700. Mechanic suggested we continue and monitor readings. He thought noise might be fan clutch or water pump.
Engine temp varied from 190 to approximately 210 but never got hot. Trans temp was 150 except in city traffic and then only to 180 couple of times. EGT ran 800 in OD and around 600 out of OD.
Truck has 104000 original miles.
We continued on to NM. Noise has progressively grown louder. I did notice that my Pac Brake was relatively ineffective. I drove at speeds from 50 to 65 mph and shifted in and out of OD as necessary for hills. Noise disappeared when coasting or on very flat stretches. Have noticed no power loss other than expected from trailer weight.
Could this be a cracked exhaust manifold?
Any advice or questions? Have I really screwed my truck up? Mechanic referrals in the Artesia, Roswell, NM area?
Noise seems to be louder on driver's side so could possibly be injector pump. Do they get really loud?
