Bought a 2006 2500 4x4 and changed oil today. Owners manual states 12 quarts capacity. I drained the pan and replaced the filter. Checked oil level after adding 11 quarts and it appears it is one quart too full. Drove the truck a few miles and parked on level spot and still appears to be too full. Left dip stick out of tube for twenty minutes thinking the tube may need to drain. Checked again and still shows what I would estimate about a quart too high.

Part number on dip stick is 395009. I wonder if it has the wrong dip stick in it or is this normal. My 99 always showed right on the full mark after the correct amount of oil was added.

Input appreciated.

I just did mine the other day, and as usual poured in 3 - 1gallon jugs of Rotella T (filled up filter from 1 of the 3 jugs before installing). I drove it around the block and when I checked the oil it was right on the money, about 3/4 of the way up in the "safe" zone.

12 quarts is what I thought. With 11 in it looks about a quart overfull. I am wondering if it has the right dip stick in ?

Mine's read that way from new. It arrived with the oil level at the top of the plastic. I figured the factory overfilled it,so I drained a quart out and it read at the top of the "safe" mark. Next oil change I filled it and the oil filter from three one gallon jugs of Delo. Same reading, top of the plastic again.

There were many posts on this subject, do a site search and ya should find it.

The post that I remember, I believe those on in the post said our trucks take 11 quarts in the pan and one in the filter. It has always worked for me too fill the filter with one quart then put the rest in the engine.

12 quarts

Historically, some (quite a few) dipsticks are just off. As already stated, do a search, quite a bit of discussion on the matter. If it drives you nuts, make sure your on level ground overnite and then put a 'notch' in your dipstick... but by all means, stick with 12 quarts--that's full. ;)

My 05 reads full with 12 quarts. Compare your dip stick with another Cummins of the same generation.

Hey Grizz

Now I'm wondering about the dip stick. Mine takes 13 quarts to get it to full. I've been running 13 since the first oil change, she's got 85K on her now.

Mac, I guess it can't hurt to run 13 qts. You and ryecreek have proved that.
