Hello all, the end of my engine oil dipstick (handle) broke off the other day. It is now flush with the end of the tube, I believe I can get it out though. I called the dealer to order a new dipstick only, and they said that I would have to order the whole assembly, tube and all, because the part #'s have changed, and apparently the new stick won't fit into the tube (still talking about vehicles). Has anyone run into this before, or does anyone know where I can get just the stick? I tried the junkyards to now avail. Thanks

Mine has been binding up ever scince I bought it. Are all the Dip sticks a Two piece design?

I thought about Cummins, are all the 5. 9 applications the same I wonder. I mean, as far as where the dipsticks come up? I will give them a call tommorrow.

P. S. Kat, sorry I couldn't make the get together the other Sunday, wanted to:(

Get one from a diesel truck or big truck parts yard. They would probably be too long but you could trim it down and scribe your own marks in it with a dremel engraving bit. You could probably get a variety of handles too. I know our ISC's dipstick has a loop handle versus the T for the dodge.

I had the same thing happen just a couple of weeks ago. I drilled a small hole into it then carefully ran a srew into the hole with a cordless drill. With the screw in place it was easy to pull it out with a pair of pliers.

I bought a new dipstick from Cummins. It was the stick only and it was less than five dollars. I will try to find the receipt and get the part number.

And here I thought you meant you pulled out the dipstick and there was nothing on it. I have heard of people claiming the dipstick didn't work cause there was no oil on it.

Or in the case of 6. 0's... "Hey my dipstick is broke! It reads the fuel level instead of the oil level!! Says the tank is full too!!"

Slightly off topic but... Have you guys heard of the old lady that goes into the parts store and says, "I need a new 710 cap. " (flip over 710..... OIL).

Ya ben-ak... I think that was in TDR issue 37 or one of those. I read the article wondering whan the heck is a 710 cap? Thats a good one.

My dipstick is broke too. I guess if I had a chevy I would worry about it, but my Dodge does not use oil.

Seriously though, I bought the update which is a metal tube and a stick, but have not put it in yet. I have had it for 70,000 miles now:rolleyes: .

Called Cummins, apparently that dipstick is nowhere to be found, and the parts guy couldn't give me any suggestions, so looks like I'm buying the updated one too:(

dip stick

Hey Joelpry,

Like powerwagon said. The Cummins doesn't use any oil anyway so why bother to replace it. Here ya go... .

When you change your oil, measure what comes out. Then you know how much ya used from change to change. If it was less than two quarts, ya don't need a dip stick. lol
