SSchoenfelder,

I don't think Dean Upson is trying to offend you regarding your post on engine oils, but as you will see, oils are very controversial!

Even though oils are the "life blood" of our Cummins engines, many owners have their favorites when it comes to this subject. Some swear by regular petroleum oils, and some are proponents of Synthetic oils. In either case, what the owners use will be the oil of their choice and it would be very hard to convince them of anything else.

It's like this board, nearly 100% of us are CTD owners, and it would be very controversially to try and change the minds of those that do not own one.

The "bottom line", is to use whatever you feel is the best for you!

SSchoenfelder,

:D I certainly meant no offense by my post this morning. I think this subject has probably been discussed more than any other that I've noticed on the Forum. Some folks here are pretty passionate about oil, filters and other lubrication issues. Wayne's bottom line of "whatever you feel is the best for you!" is pretty good advice as long as you stay within the warranty (if you care about that) by using specified oil and filters at the required change intervals. Personally I have had good luck for years with Rotella 15w40 and either the Fleetguard or Mopar filters. You might try to run a forum search on the subject, there has been a lot of good information posted on this subject in the past. Good Luck:) .

This is what I have done. The 95 I had I broke it in on Delco 400 15W40 and then went to Amsoil 5W30,98 used Delco 400 15W40 then switched over to Amsoil 5W30,00 used Delco 400 15W40 then went to Amsoil 5W30,03 using Vavoline Premium Blue 15W40 and the next oil change I probably will switch to Amsoil 15W40 in it(18000+now). Never tryed the Shell oil but I hear its good and losts of people use it. Son has 99 and he started out on Delco 400 15W40 and now he uses Amsoil 5W30. He has 120000+and no problems. Theres lots of good oil out there just pick one and stay with it.

I agree with lschultz

As you can see by the tag below Futures1, I am am Amsoil dealer. I now own 3 diesel powered vehicles. I have been using synthetics in my 2 other veh's for many miles, my preference for personal reasons which I would be glad to share with you via PM or email.

(I have been in mechanics since a kid).

I became a "dealer" after I purchased my Dodge so that I could buy what I felt I needed in my vehicles at a reduced cost. It just made sense to me. I have noticed that just about all of the oil manufacturers are offering Synthetics,

I'm thinking... Why ?? Then I think. . Who started with this synthetic oil stuff first. . again, it just made sense to me.

There are some great oils out there and over the years I have used several of them. They are all in competition with each other, but I have a problem with those who are vague when it comes to spec. for my engines !! Especially those who make their real money in other areas.

I bought my first Cummins last September and I only used Rotella and Fleetguard Strat's in it. I traded the first truck and got a second Cummins this Feburary and since then I have only done one oil change and again I used the Rotella/Fleetguard combo.

However, for my next oil change I will be switching to Delo oil and the reason for that is because the Rotella has a distinct oder that lasts for around 500 miles or so after an oil change and I really don't care for it. So after doing a search and reading that they are both about the same as far as quality I will be using the Delo from now on.

Also, as stated before only use good filters like the Mopar (a Fleetguard in disguise) or the genuine Fleetguard. Stay away from Fram.

Don't use synthetic oil until your engine is broken in.

Can we at least all agree that the Fleetgard stratapore (LF3894 and whatever the new 3g number is) is the best oil filter?

I agree. You will only see Fleetguard Stratapores screwed on my truck.

However, I bet if you told some guys that brand X would add 10hp then they would use it even if it was not Cummins approved. Heck, they would probably even use one of those unapproved oiled gauze air filters that lets fine dirt pass through it. :D :D

I can already hear the :-{} :-{}.
