I changed to Rotella 5-40 synthetic my last oil change at 15000 mi. I have not noticed any difference in 7000 mi. I am undecided about continued use; If I do use it I'm going to go to the recommended oil change at 7500 mi. I usually change at 5000 mi. Some say synthetic is just "snake oil", might be true since some members get 300-500k mi. using petroleum based lubrication. Just my $. 02. :-{}

The new "synthetic" Rotella falls under the same catagory as Castrol syntec.

It IS NOT a "PAO" oil.

It is a highly refined "hydrocracked" oil.

I do not think the stuff is worth anwhere near what they want to retail it for. :eek:

According to the VW TDI oil board guys, Petro Canada Duron is the best Group III oil available (if you can get it). Both Duron and Chevron 5W-40 synthetic have better specs and are generally cheaper than Rotella. I stilll haven't seen any oil analysis data posted on the Rotella product as yet. But the Group III products are giving true syntetics a run for the money in TDIs.

Here is a link to the TDI oil board which has a recent thread on the topic:

Synthetic

My 142,000 mile Tahoe has only seen Mobil 1 every 5k miles and runs new- this motor will see 200k no sweat- synthetics are slippery and flow better in cold and stand up to heat better- that is why Cummins doesn't want them in the CTDs until 20k miles or so so things break in nicely- On the diesel I am going to stick with the dino oils though because of the need to suspend soot- in my area Rotella T and Delo are tops with truckers- we probably all change our oils more than most so probably any good diesel oil should be good because at 5k change intervals we are not beginning to tax these. BTW I had the dealer use the Mopar 15w-40 at the first free change anyone know who bottles this for them?

Just some comments on Soot. For any of the 12V or 24V engines in your trucks you will never see soot levels even reach 50% of the acceptable level of say 1. 5% soot in 10 or 20K miles with the same oil. UNLESS! you can make black smoke like some of the video links I have seen and you do it all the time day in and day out. It your truck is stock or turned up but driven with little smoke, you will have a hard time getting past 0. 4% soot. No bypass required. No synthetics required. These are very clean burning engines. Don't go by what the oil looks like. Even at 0. 1 % soot (the lowest reading noted) the oil looks Very Very Very black.

I believe more engine problems are caused by dirt ingestion (poor air filteration). Most of these "dusted" engines have been on short mileage drains (3K to 5K). While it seems a safe route to change oil often to prevent problems, If one has no way to identify and correct a nasty problem that is occuring, regular oil drain intevals will not prevent the damage from occuring.

I've got 260,000 miles on a 20 year old BMW (of course it's a straight six) just using the dino oil and frequent oil changes. It is still running strong! These miles have been extremely hard where I am constantly using the rev limiter. No reason that I can't get double that out of the Cummins (at half the rpm's) using the Delo 400.

BMW Big Six

I had this motor in an 89 6 Series- sold it with 160k and it is still tooling around town four years later- I tried to buy it back- BMW doesn't count that is a tank motor- BTW I ran Rotella T in that and bought it with 98k miles on it- the Big Six is a legitimate 300k motor- never should have parted with that car!!!!!

I use Delo 400 15/40 In every thing I own even the lawn mower, for the last 20 yrs. Big cam IV cummins. 3208 cat. Two 5. 9 cummins. Four 3. 9 cummins in backhoes. One with 18000 Hrs. on it ( would be like 800,000 miles) 200 Hr. oil changes ( 10,000 miles). Still runs like new! Original injectors. No problems.

Wow, I like the part about 800,000 miles.
