Good, name brand 15W-40 like Delo, Rotella, Penzoil, or equivelent. Walmart has the best prices that I have found.

Make sure you purchase a engine oil that is rated for diesel engines, Dello 400 and Shell Rotella T are excellent engine oils and are available at almost all of the larger truck stops. Any good heavy duty (class 8) or semi truck store will have both engine oil and filters in stock for you. Usually at a better price than the typical auto parts store. USE FLEETGARD FILTERS!!!!!!!

Fleetgard is a Cummins company so they meet the specs of the engine and there will be NO warrenty questions.

Uh-oh, here we go again

Ok, I'm staying out of this one. All I have to say is make sure it's a CI-4 rated oil. There I'm done.

WalMart may be a good place to buy the oil, but not filters-all they have for the CTD is FRAM .

Buy Fleetgard filters somewhere-mail order (Genos, etc. ), Cummins, Fleetpride, Freightliner dealer, etc. etc. etc.

All very good advice. Synthetics with the proper API rating are also excellent choices after break in if cost is not an issue.

Properly maintained, the CTD is a 350,000 mile engine with conventional engine oils of the proper rating.

Most of us won't get 350,000 miles on our trucks before the body rusts off or it gets in a wreck so I use Delo.

I used Delo 400 on my first change and then tried Shell Rotella T on the second change. I can't really tell the difference; they both smell good after oil change. I still haven't broken in the engine enough to go with Synthetic. When I get around 20k I'm going to change to Amsoil synthetic. I use Amsoil 2-stroke in a commercial application, and use their ATF in my gasser. It's a little pricey, but I believe synthetic oils are superior. I hope I don't lose that smell with the synthetic.

Changed from Delo to Amsoil series 3000 diesel oil at 15,000 miles. Got . 6 more mpg on the last 4 tanks than the 4 before the switch. Bypass filter system going in as soon as I get my 99 all back together.

Oil for Diesel

According to the owner’s manual, conventional 15W-40 is only for use above 0°F. Synthetic 5W-40 is good for any temperature you are likely to be caught in. I’ve been using Mobil Delvac 1 since my first oil change. That might have been a bit early, but I declared my engine “broken in” and started using synthetic. I’ve got 17000 miles on it now, and it is not using any detectable amount of oil, so broken in it is. If you don’t want to pay the extra $$$ for synthetic, conventional Mobil 1300 Super is a popular oil with professional truckers, as are the oils others have referred to.

I used nothing but Mobile 1 in a turbo Dodge Shadow I owned. At 100,000 miles, I pulled the head, and could still see the factory honing marks. They may cost more, but that sold me on synthetics.

Fram Oil Filters

fraserrj, another thing to remember is to *NEVER* stick a Fram oil filter on your truck! Go with something good such as Napa Gold or best of all Fleetguard Stratapore available from Geno's Garage.

You are asking the right questions and getting the right answers. Sounds like you have your ducks in a row and will love your truck. Geno's 4-2-1 kit is tough to beat for getting the filters and changing them is a cinch. Good luck with your truck and welcome to the Forum.

As long as you plug your block heater in, it'll always be above 0 F.

shewwww, I'm glad somebody finally chimed in with the NAPA filter, lol, that's all I've used.

Also at NAPA you will see Rotella T and Valvoline side by side ... ... ... . I've always been a Valvoline fan except for my race engines, and it has the "Cummins Seal of Approval" right on the big blue jug!!

So, I figure, having and account there and traceabilty to purchases combined with using Cummins "certified" oil, I'll never have warranty issues!

Or so it would seem, LOL.

Well, there must be a lot of people on this forum not in their right mind.
