I have a 06 that the engine is getting rebuilt in and I know they clear coated the block, but does anybody know the cummins part# or what they called the brown color on the oil pan and gear train cover?

I should say it is more of a dark brown, like a hershey chocolate bar. Beige is way to light. The only two parts that are this dark brown are the oil pan and the timing gear metal cover.

Traditional for the bigger industrial and truck Cummins was Beige. White in marine applications. I'm try to figure out what to paint mine. I am doing a total rebuild of my truck right now. I decided to paint the engine compartment gloss white. It really helps to reflect the light. I'd like to paint the engine something other than black so it is easier to find and trace leaks. Cummins has used Beige, Red and white (marine) that I have seen. I'm thinking beige or red. Decisions, decsions.....
I'm looking at the VHT line of paint. Problem is the factory black has peeled off in sheets and the block is surface rusty. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with that.

I wouldn't use VHT as it is usually flat exhaust paint. The Duplicolor engine paint line offers many colors including Cummins beige. They also have several blacks from full gloss to a mat finish.
The best prep for cast iron is to wash the block down with metal prep or cheaper is to go to a Home Depot and buy a gallon bottle of ZEP tub and tile cleaner which is a light acid and scrub down the block with it and let it soak on the cast iron. It will dissolve any light rust and etch the cast iron. Rinse it good and try to dry it fast so it won'r re-rust. I suggest an air gun and compressed air. It will not harm the block. I also heat the spray cans in warm water. Sticks good then.

Yeah, I know it won't be easy but I didn't expect to be able to it pristine anyways. The donor truck that I'm using for my rebuild was originally white so the engine compartment was too. It seemed to hold up alright but it did make a difference. I do have a 300 degree pressure washer if it gets out of hand.

Motorhd, I completely spaced out the etching idea. I have a gallon of fast etch from Eastwood that will do the trick nicely. I used it at the beginning of the project and then put it away. Thank you too much.
