I am looking to enhance the hp, torque, and fuel milage to my 2001 truck. Is it better to purchase a package. . (i. e... air filter, exhaust, and chip included) or purchase the parts seperately. I am also looking for suggestions on the best brands. I tow a 7,000lb. 24' trailer , and do some light to moderate 4 wheeling. Thanks

SCummings... ..... I moved your thread over to the 24 valve section. I think you will get more info. here. The best SINGLE mod you can do to a 24 valve Cummins is an EZ box. Not IMHO, just fact. I am an RV dealer and tow all the time. Check sig. Good Luck.

Barry, Thanks for relocating my post. I didn't want it where I put it, but didn't know how to move it. Thanks for the info that you and Chuck gave. What is check sig? Does EZ have a web sight?

Most guys will tell you that the best single enhancement is the EZ.

I think that might be the best place to start if you are not intent on going for the most hp and torque possible. But remember that any mods you make should be accompanied by some gauges. The gauges are most important because they will give you an indication of what is happening currently and a good idea of what is about to happen in the near future. Oh yeah, you have good taste in truck color.

Pyrometer and boost gauges first. You may also want to look at some trans mods-----DTT.

I would also add Fuel Pressure Guage. I tend to watch this gauge more than any other. I'm just another, of many, who have had to install a new lift pump. Because I had a guage I could see it going bad.

The EZ is a great mod for towing. It really improves the power where you need it in the RPM band for towing applications. A side benefit is that, if you take advantage of the built-in boost module and increase the boost, the advanced injection timing and higher boost will tend to drop EGT's as well.

I'd go for the gauges as well - we were able to get maximum EGT's of 1300*F stock, while our current configuration (check sig = check signature at the bottom of the post) maxes out at 1050-1100*F.

Hi SCummings.

Depends on what you want to do to your truck.

If you aren't going to do anything to your truck a '98. 5 - 2002 24V truck needs a Pyrometer (EGT gauge) and a Fuel Pressure Gauge at the bare minimum. WHY DIDN'T THESE COME FROM THE FACTORY   !!

If you plan on doing som HP mods then your Pyrometer probe should go pre-turbo, otherwise it should go post-turbo so you can moniter shut down temps.

If you want some daily liveable HP I'd say go with some DD1's or DD2's and an Edge COMP.

About package performance options, In My opinion it is better to piece your own package together. I'd say go with a popular air filter here at TDR, the BHAF, See my truck bio in sig. For Exhaust setups, go for whatever you like,, make your own if you have the time, by a 4" system or piece one together yourself. The Dodge Cummins 2500 and 3500 are one of the last "Hot Rod" trucks out there,, these trucks are "New School" you can mod these trucks up, Just like you could mod a 1968 Camaro, except now it is Higher Technology, (Chip's, Turbo's, different injectors, etc. )

Hope these help,

Ted Jannetty did a write up on this subject. Ted - I think you need to post this again. Here is a partial quote. Do a search to find the rest.

"Hello to all,

I had posted a similar thread months ago and thought I would post it again since there are so many new members, and this is a frequently asked question.

1) Guages, boost Pyrometer, optional transmission temp.

2) K&N air filter in the stock air box or a scotty air system.

3) 4" exhaust turbo to tail pipe, preferably mandrel bent aluminized.

4) Then some sort of fuel enhancements, i. e. Van AAken CPC or larger injectors, but not both at the same time until upgrades to the torque converter and valve body on Auto's, or a clutch on a manual

5) High quality low stall converter, preferably 1600 rpm, and a valve body modifications to recalibrate to handle the extra power.

I prefer the Centerforce dual friction clutch on the manuals.

6) Depending on what you choose on #4 finish the job with injectors or Box. "

The only thing that needs to be added with the gauges is the Fuel Pressure gauge as was mentioned above. Happy bombing!
