My truck just quit today on my way to work. I posted the following last night in the 2nd gen forum before it completely quit today. I didnt get any replies so far. But now I'm desperate with my truck completely out of commission.

"I just got back from a Sunday road trip from Reno to Sacramento- 125 miles. Just as I got to Sacramento on I-80 I lost my cruise control & transmission down shifted out of overdrive to 3rd gear. The conditions remained the same on the return untill I hit Truckee, about 3/4 of the way home. It went back to normal overdrive & cruise control came back again until I got to the outskirts of Reno. Then it quit again. It was off & on until I got home. But at the end of the trip, it was stuck downshifted & no cruise control. Thats the way its parked in my driveway right now. Anybody have these symptoms? I had the computer reflashed for updates about 3 months ago & has been running great until today. Any help appreciated. Got to look into it tomorrow. "

I need as much Help as possible! I'm leaning toward thinking the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is bad because of the above separate system malfunctions which are common to the PCM. Unless there is a sensor or something feeding the PCM that is common. I hate to make a mistake as the PCM costs $650+. Can anybody help me make my decision or further troubleshooting strategy? The truck is completely dead but cranks OK .

Thanks ahead

I'd try and find a scan tool and see what trouble codes you have. Some parts stores will let you borrow their scan tool with a healthy deposit, returned when the tool is returned. Checker did that for me. Sure beats guessing or throwing parts at it.

MMEIER- got fuel. Cracked the injector lines 1,3,4 on head- lots of fuel.

KW- my friend/fishing partner has a gas eng. auto repair shop- doesnt do diesels. He hooked up his Snap On scanner yesterday. Got a couple of codes- Apps & Map. He read the Apps voltage static eng. off (key on)- fluctuated from less than 1v to 5 v. He said it should probably be less than 1v. He cleared the faults. I went home & cleaned the Apps connector with contact cleaner. Check light has not come on today & no scanned faults. But its still hard start- takes 2-3 times longer to start. I ordered a VP44 return line relief valve spoken about in this forum relating to hard starts- just as a cheap shotgun- $27. Havent ruled out the VP44 yet, but hope not!

My fuel press. gauge reads 15-16psi @ idle. 3-5psi turning on key

Any more ideas?

Some guys have had trouble with grounding wires from body to engine, body to frame, etc. Apparently there are several grounding wires. Try cleaning the ends of the wires and where they mount.

I changed the VP44 return line relief valve (Fuel Pop Off valve) this morning from Industrial Injection. Did about 6 starts today. So far so good, every one started up quickly. No more check light. Cruise control & overdrive working great. Hope it's like that from now on- time will tell.
