Brake Caliper Sticking

What is best fix for 5th gear nut problem?

I think there are potentially 3 causes. Brake light switch, trans temp switch and TPS. (I will undoubtedly be corrected by the wisedom of the TDR #ad
)

I will cover the cause of my problem: The brake light switch. In your case, it can't be the switch because you would loose your cruise control.

Lots of help, eh?(edit) #ad

Sounds like your TPS is going. I've had good luck soaking mine with aerosol electronic cleaner. There is only the hole in the center towards the engine for it to enter,direct the spray there while moving the throttle back and forth. If that doesn't get it remove the two screws that attach it,remove and take it apart for a good cleaning. If that still doesn't fix it it's time to shell out $190 for a new one,it's a dealer only part.

Extreme1 I think you were in the ball park. Not much on auto trans know how but besides the brake light switch not knocking it out of OD it would happen when Gary wasn't using OD. That should eliminate right off.

I think illflem picked the right one. It almost acts like a clutch slipping or when your tires spin momentarily on ice( but that makes the speedo go up too. )
So that leaves the torque convertor unlocking/locking. Since the TPS is known to mess up that is a good palce to start.
Coming out of gear would bring rpms up to but I think a lot more than 200.

I have experienced a slight increase in engine RPM 150-200 off an on since Dec. My truck is a 95 with auto transmission. The first time it was about 10 below zero and running solo. It did this only 2 times. About a week later we left with trailer in tow and after about a hour on the road it did the same thing off and on about 10 or 12 times and then went away for another hour or so. The following day after about an hour on the road it started doint it again. This time the engine raced off and on about 40 or 50 times during the following hour. The intervals decreased during the following two hours and then went completely away. Last month while driving home solo I again experienceed the slight engine increase for only 2 times. The evenning was cool damp and raining slightly. It has not done it since then. The sensation you get with the rpm increase is similiar to when you push the o/d button on the dash but does not seen to ramp up as far and only lasts a second or two. It does this in cruise or running normal at about 60 to 65 mph. I have as a temp gauge on the transmission and no increase in temp was seen. The fluid was changed last July and the bands adjusted. Also the trunk shifts through all the gears smoothly. transmission or O/D switch? Any thoughts.

Illflem is right-Had the same problem as you and the dealer cou8ld not find the problem until I gave him the TDR magazine article about the TPS. Long story short they replaced the TPS under warranty and problem solved. 104,000 miles now and no more problems.
