My 2006 Mega Cab engine sounds like detonation from a gas engine. It sounds like it should until engine warms up. The noise is most noticable at take off, although it can be heard under load. I have read a number of posts so I had the dealer has flash it, loaded it down, drove it like I stole it, tried power service additive and even tried 2 stroke oil. I am at a loss and wonder if anyone had any suggestions.

2006 Mega Cab 4x4 - stock - 6,500 miles

Does it get worse under load? It may be a bad injector, but it's pretty hard to tell over the internet...

Also, how long has it been doing this? You may have gotten a bad batch of fuel if this is a new development. Loading it down and such helps to clean carbon off the injector tips, but bad fuel will make even a clean engine sound weird.

If it is a bad injector, you're stock and at 6,500 miles so a warranty claim shouldn't be a problem.

Apparently from other posts I have read, the 06's are prone to this.

I've checked the things others have told me to check/try. (2) Cans Sea Foam, 100 Gallon bottle of PS, Lucas Treatment (all at different times) and drove her hard under load. No improvement.

Checked injector hold-down's and found (1) loose, but no improvement.

(2) other items relayed to me were injector pump gear out of alignment and a bad injector or injector going bad.

Mine is at the dealership right now being checked. It seemed to be getting worse, but it may have been me paying more attention to it. When/If the dealer finds something with mine... ..... I'll post. It drives me crazy!!#@$%!

Dealer says it is just the CR 3rd injection event. They re-flashed the computer AGAIN. Tech says hard to say, but he thinks that no kitty and change in airbox MAY change parameters enough to cause situation. AIR.

Has anyone installed a tuner that improved this situation??

From the other thread: Tuners/boxes/chips, whatever, usually make the rattle a little worse. Reason being, many of them advance the timing which will make the engine rattle a little more.

The injector pump gear is something that some people have an issue with, some don't. It's not going to hurt the truck either way though. Although the CP3 injection pump doesn't have to be timed to the engine like traditional diesel injection pumps, some people have found that rotating the gear on the pump can help with a slight tic that some engines have. It's not going to make a difference how it runs though.

I posted back in July about my 03. Hope you have better luck than I did.

A few weeks ago I was readng a thread about a tapping sound coming from the top of the engine. I had the same problem! So I tryed most of the sugestions, use injector cleaner (4 tanks of fuel ) no change. As one of the guys said to clean the deposits from the injectios to drive it like I stole it still no help. The noise now has went from a tap to a rattle in about 1300M. Drove from Houstion TX to South AL(600+M) while there took it by the D/S they said it needed a valve adjustment. After adjusting the valves the rattle was still there they said it could be a bad injector and couldn't check it due to equipment problems. Drove back to Houston (600+M) took it by a Cummins dealer to busy to lissen to it. Drove home to South LA. (300M) now the rattle is now a clatter/knock. I have family that work for Southland Dodge in Houma LA in the race shop. So I took it there the head mechanic is the diesel diagonostic tec and checked the valves and injectors all was OK. He used a listening device they have on the block and come back with bad news. The noise was coming form the wrist pin or a rod bearing. The cost for the repair was going to be around 4500. 00 to 5500. 00 :shocked:if the cylinder and crank was OK. Not wanting to spin that much money on an 03 truck I traded for a 08 2500 6. 7. So far I have have driven the new druck aboud 3000m and happy with it but I sure wanted to keep my 03 it was paid for. Now I trying to find out what mod's I can do to the with out busting my warrenty The stuff I had on the my 03 don't fit the 08

For all ya'll with engine noise tick, tap, rattle or knock Good Luck!!!

Thanks for all the replys. I bought truck with 4,500 miles on it and didn't really notice the noise until the weather got cold. The rattle is loudest just off idle before the turbo comes in and quiets it down. However while towing my trailer under hard excelleration an occasional spark knock like rattle can be heard even over the turbo whine.

My 07 has started this also. Best described as a gas burner predetonation ping. Mine is worse at higher engine speeds and does it when you floor the go pedal to pass someone. Also now in the mornings it hiccups when the grid heaters cycle. This morning at 50degrees out it didn't want to crank. When it did I got a nice puff of white smoke. I've got a PDR cam ready to go in the truck but I'm putting it off a few more days to see what develops with this. The Smarty hasn't been in loaded in the truck for a couple weeks so it's not related.

Mine used to white smoke a little at start up but then when I would back out of the driveway, it would "pour" white smoke and then it would go away. Mine has the hiccups also. If I load my skid steer and hit the interstate and mash the pedal it rattles ALOT! Dealer says no problem. I'm at 46k miles and I'm trying to locate another dealer that is willing to take a look or even a CR mechanic NOT at a dealer!

I changed the fuel filter this morning. It definately helped. Filter wasn't very old but it weighed at least twice what the clean filter did. Must have got some dirty fuel somewhere. Worst thing was aluminum shavings in the bottom of the filter housing when I wiped it out. Hopefully the filter caught them all.

Filter did not help here either. Definitely worse under load and is LOUD and then somewhat quieter. Today, I had almost what I would call a backfire... . Truck was idling and then all of a sudden a "pop" or "burp" from the exhaust. Don't know if it's related or not.
