Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) engine rear crankshaft seal

95 Dodge 4x4 automatic - Currently have transmission out of truck to repair broken second gear band with 237,000 miles. I also proceeded in changing the rear main crank shaft seal. My question is....Could I start the engine to check the rear main seal integrity before installing the transmission? Would the flex plate hold up with no torque converter mounted and would the engine mounts be stable enough with the transmission mount missing? Thanks, Gary

People start these engines up all the time while the engine is sitting on a tire in the bed of a pickup. I think I would put something under the front of the engine to keep the engine level, perhaps under the oil pan.
