when i make long road trips i like to sometimes kick up the speed a bit on the highway. Most of the time i like to run about 80-85 mph. 85 mph in my truck=2500rpm and 90=about 2700rpm. Do these high rpms in anyway effect the longevity of the engine??? does it hurt to run the truck wide open 2800rpm for an extended period of time??? Because it seems to me the engine feels like it runs the best right at 2000rpm. all of the trips are bob tail with no load on the turck.

My manual says the that the minimum max. governed RPM should be no less than 2850 and the maximum max. RPM should be no more than 2950 RPM. Right now with no load and WO in 3rd I see about 2880 to 2900 before governor kicks in.
Hope that helps.

IMHO it doesn't hurt the engine. I drove an old 290 Cummins for years and pretty much ran it flat out on the interstate. The mechanic said that Cummins engines are designed and governed to stop people like me from hurting them. He used to refer to these engines as "bulletproof". I think he meant "ideot proof" when he was talking to me. Anyway, that 290 ran over 400,000 before she got overhauled and became a logging truck in Georgia.

I read in a cummins brochure that they set up the 5. 9 in RVs to run around 2500 because thats the sweet spot. If you ever notice that at 2500 if you nail it, its got instant response. I don't think that lots of high rpms do a motor any good however I don't think you'll have any problems. You should consider adding a overdrive such as gearvender if you are gooing to do a lot of interstate running.

Howdy cummins cowboy
Cummins says you can run against the governor all day long and it wont hurt this engine. I remember reading this right after I bought my '93 in '93.
Happy trails

The only bad thing about running above 80 mph for a prolonged period is you will notice a substantial decrease in fuel economy. I used to keep my right foot mashed to the floor when I was running I-10 from Long Beach to Phoenix every weekend. Gotta love them hills outside of Indio when you got gobs of torque.

yeah when i run that fast i really do notice a big drop in fuel mileage. The engine also sounds like it is really winding up. I usually prefer to let the motor purr so to speak. I just wish i had another gear. when running mostly 60-65 through the mountains i have gotten an all time best of 23 mpg. but mileage quickly drops off when speed go up.

Hey guys.

I really like the sound of the engine at 2500-2800 rpm cruise. To me, the smooth drone (like an aircraft jet engine) from that mean, lean, oil burnin' machine is exactly what an engine should sound like.

TWO things - first - if you want to run higher road speeds, but also want the availability of lower gearing for pulling, consider the addition of a US Gear or Gearvenders OD unit - that way you get the best of both worlds PLUS the ability to split gears in the hills if needed.

SECOND, these engines are BUILT to be used in commercial/industrial use, where they run up against the governor 7/24. Next time you see a diesel backhoe or similar, notice that the engine is operating at its max RPM STEADILY as it does its work... Like the guys said, IF you can stand the fuel consumption #ad
