Parshal,

The operation of the oil pressure gauge is explained on page 8J - 32 of the 2003 Service Manual.

Under "OPERATION

ENGINE OIL PRESSURE MESSAGE - the instrument cluster circuitry restricts the oil pressure gauge needle operation in order to provide readings that are consistent with customer expectations. Each time the cluster receives a message from the PCM or ECM indicating the engine oil pressure is above about 41kPa (6 psi) the cluster holds the gauge needle at point near the middle increment within the normal range of the gauge scale. "

In other words a virtual gauge or glorified idiot light.

I'm reading this to mean that the gauge will consistently "point" the same spot on the gauge all the time. Mine does not do that at all. It points to the same spot when the engine is warm but consistently works it's way down to the spot in the picture (in my initial post) as the engine warms. I must have missed the previous discussion.

My temp gauge shows the same. In regards to the oil pressure gauge, mine varies with road speed/engine rpm (low end of normal scale at warm idle and just above 40 at cruising speed). First start of day the oil pressure gauge is pegged at high end of normal scale at all engine speeds until warm.

We have seen over 250deg in testing. No problems, although i dont recommend it. We were seeing how much timing they would take! As far as you gauge, looks normal from my house!

hotter makes them more efficent up to a point. take a look at the deutz air/oil cooled engines. they run real hot and love it. keeping the engine right aroung 100°c [or 212°f] will keep the engine happy. .

anyone know what the rad cap pressure is rated at?

The factory cooling system is overkill for the Cummins in these trucks. You should be able to run flat to the floor in 110 degree heat without overheating. When mine starts to run over 190 on long grades, I know I must have killed one to many bugs.

Mine runs 210F pulling a heavy load up a hill. I think the fan engages at that speed because it won't go any higher.

IMHO the virtual oil pressure guage is a bad idea. Increasing water temps accompanied by a significant drop in oil pressure can be a sign of something more serious. By the time oil pressure has fallen to 6 PSI under hard throttle you are probably screwed.

the new mod the guys [& gals] over at the dieselstop forums is to run a 203°f in the 7. 3 pos' engines... they say fuel economy goes up with it...

engine temp

I was going to ask the same question. My 99 ran at 185, while the new 03 runs at 200. just returned from 5700 mile round trip to grand canyon, she ran at 200 in 107 degree temp at 85 mph!

glad to see that that is real temp rather than virtual!

Seems normal. Just got back from a 2,500 mile trip with my '03 HO in the southwest with temperatures hovering around 110 and cruise set at 80+. Engine temp stayed at 200 degrees. Truck seems to run at 200 degrees no matter the temp.

Loaded at max 21K lbs plus I saw the temp hover around the second 0 in 200 pulling the I-70 Grade up from I-15 in Utah at 70MPH in 105* heat, not really hot but proof that its working hard.

BTW, without the Edge box, and in much cooler temps in January, and loaded lighter, AND no Edge '03, I could only manage 50-60MPH up the same grade. The Edge on 4 pulls even the 7% grades at 70 plus and the Pyro temps are quite manageable AFTER installing the boost elbow to get the boost up another 10 lbs. (100-150* cooler at times).

In 5th gear (direct) it will pretty much pull any grade I want right up to redline, sanity is the only limit now:D

I've got 2 round trips to Alaska under my belt with this truck and more to come, loving every minute of it!

Temperatures

Looks the same as my 03. I pull a boat that weights 12600 gross combined is 20850 with me all the stuff. When I pulled parleys canyon, 6% for about 12 miles my temperature guage went from where yours is in this picture up about 1/8th. The outside temp according to the console in the truck was 99 degrees. What it looked like was a position similiar to your oil pressure reading just above the temperature gauge in the picture. At the summit the 03 was doing 40 mph at 2500 rpm. all stock 03 with 48re and 3:73 gear.
