Our trucks seem to be about the same. Mine is a 2001, 3500, QC, Auto with 3:54 axle and it also runs MUCH hotter when it shifts out of overdrive into a lower gear. You didn't mention if you have gages or not but they are a very good investment. I pull an Aljo 25' which when loaded (depends on how many options my wife thinks she needs

weights about 6500 lbs.
When the truck is pulling a hill in O. D Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT) run about 1100 degrees max. This I think; and I could be wrong here since I am not a diesel mechanic; is due to the fact that the amount of fuel is being limited by my boost pressure which never goes over about 15 lbs in O. D.
As the hill gets steeper and the truck shifts out of O. D the EGT get much hotter. It is not uncommon for me to see 1200-1300 degrees on hills with the pedal down and the boost gage reading about 19 lbs. which seems to be the limit for my truck. I watch the gages and try and hold the temperature below 1250 degrees on long hills. For the life of me I can't understand why Dodge doesn't at least make gages an OPTION you can buy/order.
Anyway welcome aboard. I LOVE my dually for towing - it is rock solid in the wind and tows like a dream. At 20,000 miles mine is just starting to run nice.
As far as more power it boils down to how much you want to spend. Try using the search engine and type in True Torque Power Module OR EZ* OR 275 injectors or DD2* and you will have enough reading to keep you busy for days.
