3 weeks ago ran my fuel tank empty, fuel gauge lied to me. Filled tank.

I was in denial about the gauge thought it might be a fluke. I did not pay attention to my milage and ran the fuel tank empty again. Stupid. Filled tank.

Yesterday the mileage said I still could go 120 miles. Drove to work no problem, went to move the truck at lunch. It started then died. I replaced the fuel filter did my normal procedure to fill the bowl. Still would not start. Checked the filter and bowl, filter is saturated and bowl is full. I run a FASS 95 pump only. It seems to be running normally.

Had it towed to a garage. They made sure the lines were free of air and no codes were thrown. It started and ran for them, then died. They told me the FASS is leaking alittle, It was installed 3 years ago and no problems until now. Anyways they are trying to figure out what is going on.

I thought that while they're doing that, I would check with my experts.

Please help... .

Thanks,

John

When you start it, does it spit and sputter and run rough for a minute? Or does it run smoothly right away? If you have power and ground on pins 6 & 7 of the VP44 as well as fuel, your truck should run. It sounds to me like either you have an unrelated electrical problem on the truck or the electronics on the VP have failed.

This is the best set of VP44 diagnostic instructions that I've seen in one place at one time. Ever.

When it started it ran smoothly. The shop is saying the FASS failed. Tested it and it at 3psi. It is not that old.

The computer is saying the electronics are fine.

3psi is very low for a FASS. However, the VP should pull fuel through the FASS and still run no matter what the FASS does. You may have failed VP electronics caused by insufficient cooling due to a failed FASS. If you had a fuel problem, the engine would run rough after it starts until the air is out of the fuel lines. When you tell me that when it starts, it runs great tells me that you don't have a fuel supply problem. You may have low fuel pressure, but it is not directly causing your failure to run. In my experience, when VP electronics fail, they often do it intermittently.

Here's what I would do: You KNOW you need more than 3psi. Fix the fuel supply problem. If it still won't run and you have power and ground to the VP, then you need a new VP44 plain and simple.
