We are looking at a 1998 12V dually for another work truck. The used car dealership wants $8900 with 180,000 miles on it. Not sure what market value is for this truck?

My concern is that when we started it up (hadent been started in a week) it started fine but the engine shook quite a bit for the first 20 seconds... is this normal? it smoothed out after that. And it took a good 4-5 seconds to crank over. The second time we cranked it started a bit quicker

Also once I popped the hood everything near the head & valve covers was covered in oil. Would this be leaky valve covers ? easy fix? or does this spell many other problems to come? There is more than likely $1,200 in tool boxes and a aluminium ladder rack that we could sell off of it to pay for the leaks (if they are something minor) It didn't smoke and the auto transmission seemed to shift ok.

The truck fits our budget & the owner will finance it on the lot for us 12 months no intrest. So this is up our alley but I don't want to get into a mess if these leaks spell disaster.

The hard start was probably because of an air leak in the fuel system. No big deal. Common problem.

Valve covers are bad about leaking so that may be all that is wrong. There is not much else on top of the engine that will leak oil. It could also be an oil cooler leak and the fan spread it around. Of course, it may be something else. It would be best to clean up the mess with some degreaser and run it to see where the oil is comeing from.
