Ok, an engine sound question written by an anal driver. Those that jump in and drive wouldn't care. I think I worry about to many things.

My 2001 with 70k on it runs well. I have to ad oil at 6k and then change it at 7. 5k. I cam running mobil 1 5w40. When I first start it up and its cold the engine purrs and the diesel motor is nice and quiet, after it warms up it is more "clanky". I have studied the 5w40 and I feel its the best oil to run. Would a 15w40 solve my "clanky" noise sound or does it make a difference?

thanks

Mark

im not sure but I thought tons of people where using mobil 1 TDT oil?

TDT stands for Turbo Diesel Truck, if that's what you have you are good to go. I run mobil 1 exclusively as well in all my trucks, and in my case I think there is more noise when the engine is cold...
Maybe you should consider an oil analysis to make sure things are all right?
Maybe time for a valve adjustment???

The diesel engine runs noisy, have you noticed a change in the noise? Do you have gauges? If so what do they read? Running a thicker oil might quiet it down some but not enough to notice. I used to worry about every ping and knock, now I just watch my gauges and look for changes. The change in temperature that we are seeing with the coming of winter will change how your engine sounds and operates. They love that cold air..... So many different things could be making the louder noise, valves, pulleys, belts, bearings on the running gear, all you can do is monitor pressures and temps with a good set of gauges, do your maintenance and drive it like you stole it.

Mark,

Welcome to TDR.

Are you a fairly new owner of a Dodge-Cummins or only new to the TDR?

If you are a new owner just relax and drive it. You won't break it and it is unlikely anything is wrong with it. The 24 valve engine is a real diesel engine and very noisy. The sounds the engine makes continually vary with operating temperature, load, throttle input, rpm, etc. The engine is extremely tough and almost indestructable under normal conditions with adequate maintenance.

My friends with Duramax and Powerstrokes under their hoods have trucks that are sooo quiet, like a passenger car. My Dodge sounds like a real truck!

maybe the pcm holds back some fuel/boost/timing back until up to oper. temp?

If your talking rattle, my motor is loud. I get some timming advance from the pump & some more from the programer.

If you want to hear an awful sound turn on the 3 cylinder cold start.

I run amsoil and at 1/4 million miles, it runs sweet.
