Archived Engine Sputtering.

I fueled up this afternoon and about 20 mi. later the engine started sputtering and popping. I drained the fuel filter (which is new) twice and when that didn't help I opened it up, nothing obvious. I caught some of the fuel in a cup and could see no water. Now I need some suggestions. I would suspect the fuel since I just filled up, but can see nothing. No wierd smoke when it sputters.

Let the fuel sample sit for 10-20 minutes and take another look.Also be sure there is no gas in it

Will do with the sample. How do tell about the gas? I don't smell any. Will it separate also?

Pour a small amount on the concrete,if it lights easily with a match it has gas

Chapter Two: I drained, dropped and cleaned the tank, installed a new lift pump, flushed the lines, put in a new fuel filter and fresh fuel. Still the same problem. It doesn't start sputtering until it warms up, then it's bad and continuous. There's no smoke and no DTC's. Anyone have a next step for me?

Let me just add that I am posting here because my truck is unable to be used as it is and I have a trip to NY state with our horses coming up soon.

You mite have a bad fca ( back of cp3 pump) when the fca acted up it rarely threw a code. Fueling up was the truck trying to fool you.

Just a shot in the dark here.

I had an issue with intermittent sputtering/missing in my '07 years ago. It turns out I had I wiring harness issue coming off of the rail pressure sensor. Only way we found it was that I started seeing sharp spikes in rail pressure when it would happen. It couldn't hurt to take the connectors apart on the pressure sensor, FCA, etc. and just inspect and clean the connections.

Can you expand on that a bit?

If you do not have dtc's it is more likely to be a fuel problem.removing the connector tubes will many times allow you to see rust or other signs of contamination.Once your common rail injector(s)have seen contamination they are pretty much trashed.If you don't replace all the parts in the system that can trap contaminates you will be chasing your tail.If it was driven with leaking injectors there is the possibility of piston/cylinder damage.

Chapter 3: As I thought the fuel was not the issue I poured some into my tractor with the same results. So evidently it was the fuel. I cleaned the pressure sensor, added some Diesel Kleen and set the Smarty Jr. back to stock. On the way to my local shop guy, the truck ran great. No missing or sputtering or popping. I left it with him to run some diagnostics and see what he can see. More when I know more.

Epilogue: I picked up the truck from my local shop the next day, nothing showed up in the diagnostic scan. The truck is running great, set the Smarty Jr. back on SW3 and I have made two local trips hauling my horse trailer with no problems. I guess I'm ready for the Adirondack Mtn's. Thanks for all the input.
