A friend of mine has a '01 2500 with an automatic (80,000 miles) and when he stops, the engine is under load and dies. It's like the torque convertor is locked up all the time. Any ideas? Thanks.

Is it harder for him to stop?

It would seem to me that if the converter was locked it would make it much harder to get it stopped.

I don't know automatics very well, maybe the problem is that he's missing a pedal :D

Does it die if he puts it in neutral before he's all the way stopped? Maybe his idle is too low? I know on a 12valve, it's supposed to be about 800rpm in gear w/ A/C on. It's around 900 in neutral.

It only dies while in gear. In neutral or park it idles fine. As soon as drive or reverse in engaged, it wants to die, he has to power brake it to keep it running. It definitely seems like the driveline is locked directly to the engine without any means of disengagement while stopping. He said it just started doing it on Sunday and is getting worse.

I'm not sure if the '01s auto fuel under load like the new ones do. I think so though. That won't even keep it running. He has to give it so much throttle to keep it running, the smoke is rolling out the exhaust.
