:{ I need you help, 89, auto, 2x4, 140k, new lift pump, injectors new stock,K&n box mod. valves adjusted. clean filters. The problem, when the weather starts to warm up the engine stalls at stops or when changing from reverse to drive. The a/c also pulls engine rpm down to stall. Old blue runs fine in cool or cold weather. No guages yet they are on order, and she needs paint real bad, But I still love her and want to get her fixed. I have another 93 and a 2002 all are great but the first gens are just classic tough I also like the heavy metal I can lean on her and she doesn,t dent or bend. Thanks for your help, I have fears of a worn out injection pump? Ken.

Southpaw,

I never had this happen on either of my 1st Gens, but my stepdad's 97 3500 does this also. It's always been (at least when I noticed) in warm weather, especially on hot days. It's even more guaranteed when the wheels are cut all the way over, but I guess that's just putting a little more friction on the transmission.

Be interested to see what this might be.

Tugboatphil, thanks for the reply you brought to mind something I forgot (comes with too much coming in nothing going out age)when any added stess ie, steering pump a/c, or any other power robber comes into play she starts to shake and dies. Question would a fuel pressure guage at the lift pump give a reading that would show a possible fuel tank or supply line blockage maybe junk in the tank filter?

Slow Idle RPM... . what is it set at???

It is possible that the gov is at fault and not the "hard parts" in the pump. The top of pump contains the gov and is accessible on the truck.

It is also possible to have an air leak which makes itself pronounced when the ambient temps rise which thins out the incoming air and density of the fuel. You may be lead to believe it runs ok when cold... ... ... ... ...

Injector line not lined up with the injector is another remote possibility. This normally results in a constant miss.

Out of ideas at this point.

My bet is the idle speed. The '89's didn't come with a tach (optional maybe?) so it is hard to know the idle rpm. You could use your ear and park next to an idling Cummins with tach to check/adjust idle by sound? Have fun changing the idle speed stop on that VE!

Your 89 should have come with a throttle lock for raising your rpm. At the moment I use mine for this purpose, my idle is way to low, so instead of adjusting it at the pump, I just pulled my throttle lock back a hair and locked it. Once the pods go in, I probly wont need to use it, since they say the idle may go up. Try playing with the throttle lock if you have it. Bill

stall at low rpm

My guess is that you have a minor air ingestion somewhere. Minor or the thing would not run period. You indicate some work recently and if it was not a problem before the work, most likely is in the area of work done. The low rpm stall would occur where there is no apparent problem at higher speed / greater load.

A guage to know what fuel pressure you have certainly would help. If you have not, fill the tank completely and see if that improves anything. The full tank will give a little hydraulic/gravity head that will help is the problem is on the suction side of the lift pump. Trash or blockage in the fuel line to the lift pump could be a factor.

Hope you didn't get trash in the system doing the repairs. Stall at low rpm can be a worn plunger in the pump. The solution would be a pump rebuild. If this only happened after the lift pump was replaced and was fine before, look at other things before considering the injection pump. It would be possible that trash in the system from the repair did some damage to the pump.

Hope it is something simple.

thanks for the replys& keep them coming. I will apply the suggestions i have recieved. The problem began before any of this work Ive just tried these things so far and some of the work definately needed to be done. I,ll do as Bushwacker said one thing at a time and eventualy I,ll find the problem and the fix. I,ve spent the morning advancing the pump timing on my 93 its getting 13. 5 mpg and i feel like im personally supporting sadam. i have adjusted valves ,afe vented box,and now pump advance. What a joy getting to the nut on top with all the fancy tools i have it took a cheepo s wrench to get it loose 2hrs loose 10 min to retighten. full set of guages coming for 94 and o2, 89 will have to wait till may. These puppies are expensive oh well ,better than playing the stock mkt ,at least i have something to show for my $ other than a loss statement. thanks again Ken.

93 MPGs

If, after a timing advance, your 93 is still sucking the fuel, get the injectors pop tested. I had a 93 (coincidence, the year is unimportant) that was getting about 14 mpg, and I got the injectors tested, and they were all popping about 600psi low. Got them reset and cleaned, and went up to 19mpg. Injectros are highly underrated for the impact they can have on MPGs and general running.

I will bet it is the idle speed. And if, someone did try to adjust it by useing the throttle rod, that would explain why it gets worse when it is warm. Set your idle and all should be fine.

Oh, and PODs normally make the idle speed go down, not up.
