My truck dies on the way to work today. I made a turn and started up a hill and the engine just quit on me. It felt like it was bogged down right before it stopped and I could never get it fired up again. I called AAA and got a tow home. My fuel light just came on at an 1/8 of a tank so I believe I have plenty of fuel (unless my gauge is lying to me). The lift pump sounds like it's running if I bump the starter and listen for it. How can I troubleshoot this without fuel pressure gauges?

1/8 of a tank? Light on? Going up a hill? I don't know about your truck, but the gauge on mine reads a lot higher than it should. My bet is that you ran out of fuel. Put some more fuel in, and see if you can prime it and get it running. Also check for any codes just in case it's something else.

Raise the hood and have someone bump the starter, open the drain on the fuel filter and see if you have an good flow of fuel. If so, loosen the banjo fitting where the fuel lin from the filter enters the injection pump, bump started, if you get solid stream of fuel with no air bubbles then loose the nut on about three injectors, turn engine over a few times, if fuel is present and clear, tighten fitting and start truck. And yes, I think you are out of fuel too. bg

The reason I didn't think I was out of fuel is that I always run run this truck down to e before I fill up and I have about 2 gallons left. I'll try your suggestions and put more fuel in and see what happens. Keep you posted.

Well i got a good stream from the drain. I then loosened 1 and 3 injector and had some fuel present I did not loosen the banjo. I still can't start and when I did the three start trick I got a p1693 code,

We're not getting much assistance here are we? 1693 is DTC (diagnostic trouble code) detected in ECM/PCM. It means the ECM has recognized an abnormal condition in the system. I would try bleeding at the injectors again, you need to get a good gush of fuel there for all the air to be gone. bg

I had a similiar thing happen to me but I think the guage was higher the 1/8 but at any rate it was the fuel module in the thank showing I had fuel when I did not. This just all of a sudden happened and when it stopped I thought "DANG". Any way put fuel in it, primed it like they say above, and got it started. Since the fuel module has been changed and I know watch the trip mileage to decide when I need fuel, Zero it at every stop. I agree you ran out of fuel; hope this helps.

Help

Truck still wont start... . Doesn't even sound like it wants to try. I get fuel to the injectors but it is not a steady stream. it also looks like I have a leak coming from the area of the injector pump. Is there a sure way to know if it is a bad pump?

Help

Still not running

Well I loosened the banjo bolt at the vp44 and diesel came out of the injector pump. I had my son bump the starter to get the pump going and I waited for a good flow and re-attached the banjo bolt back to the vp44. The flow seemed kinda week to me like a drinking fountain that would only squirt up a couple of inches. Then I cracked injector line and had my sun try to start the motor. I started getting good spurts so we stopped and I reattached the line. I cracked #3 and the fuel just dribbles out. This is where I stand now because my batteries are dead and I have them on the charger.

Someone chime in and help with the diagnosis. I am also showing p1693.

Thanks

When mine just stopped, I had no readable codes either. Unfortuinately it was my VP-44. I'm praying it's not that for your wallet!

Keep us posted.
