Three weeks ago my engine started to stumble when driving normally. Came on all of a sudden. Any throttle past what I estimate to be about 10% would cause the stumble. It threw a P0148 - Fuel Delivery Malfunction. I parked the truck for the day and the problem was gone. No explanation. I could not recreate it, so I cleared the code and waited to see if it would return.

Today, on a long drive in the Rockies, it came back. Engine stumbles, this time on the freeway, and continues to stumble intermittently if the go pedal is depressed more than just a little bit. When I was on a grade I would have to downgear to keep the rpm's up a bit and less throttle applied. Check light came on again, but I have not scanned the code yet. I will guess that it will be the same P0148.

After reading on this forum it seems like it could be the FCA? Is there a throttle position sensor on the CTD's that could malfunction? Any other ideas?

The truck in my sig has 36,700 miles on it.

Thanks

Youhave an APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor). Usually when they go you will actually intermitenly loose your pedal while driving. It will feel like a dead spot with no acceleration. I don't think it would cause a stumble or miss. I belive the code for the APPS is something like 2127 or something like that but definitely in the twos. It could be so many things. Check the fuel pressure for the in tank pump. Switch your FCA with someone if you can. Its very easy to do but be careful of the torx fasteners as they strip very easily. Try adding 20 ounces of two stroke oil to a full tank and if that fixes it it is usually the FCA.

i had a stumble miss problem that was intermittent awhile back, i replaced the apps and the crank position sensor and the problem was gone, changed the cps because my tach would act funny, and the apps gave me dead pedal, one thing i found out the hard way is the stock harmonic balancer sucks, it may wobble enough at certain rpm to take the tone ring away from the cps giving you a stumble with white smoke at certain rpms and also be intermittent, i broke two stock dampners before buying a fluidampner

The P0148 means the CP3 can't hold the fuel pressure at the set point. Even if the filter was changed check it again and look inside the filter housing. How much junk if any is in the bottom? Lift pump going away, algae in the fuel tank. Was it low on fuel when it happened?

This code is generally a low pressure side supply restriction.

I was able to consistently recreate the problem tonight. If I push the go pedal past about 10% in any gear, the truck just stumbles and gets kind of a 'deadpedal' feel, but it still getting some mild power and missing/stumbling. Small puff of white smoke from the exhaust. Very consistently reproducible. As soon as I let off the pedal everything is fine at a light partial throttle. Push down again and the same thing happens, let off and it goes away, etc. It feels like fuel starvation.

Not low on fuel. I'll look at the filter tomorrow, but I think it is very clean. Was very clean in the bottom of the filter housing when I changed it 300 miles ago.

If the CP3 can't hold fuel pressure, then would that be the FCA? Or, inadequate pressure from the lift pump? My symptoms sort of indicate a failing APPS too... ?

One other note: the previous owner installed an inline Carter pump along the frame rail to provide more fuel pressure than the stock in-tank pump.

Right now I'm thinking the culprit is likely the APPS or FCA?

BTW, thank you guys for your help.

I took the truck to GO Dodge in Denver. The technician performed TSB 14-003-06 Rev A (fuel system diagnostic procedures) and replaced the Fuel Control Actuator (FCA). Found no other problems. Truck runs WAY better now. I think that even before it showed the symptoms it was running at less than optimum power. Problem solved.

The tech then did the recall H46 steering inspection (found no problems) and a 21 point inspection, greased the driveshaft (which I asked for).

Then they washed the truck. They gave me free shuttle rides to and from my office.

Total cost = $0. Covered under warranty.

I was very happy with GO Dodge and can recommend them. This was my first time there. Friendly attitudes and good service. Big dealership. I think it used to be John Elway's dealership.

Thank you guys for your tips above.
