Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) engine stumble.

I haven't wrote in a long time. truck have been great. . now having a problem and hoping somebody can help me. . After a fill up, while on the freeway it feels as if somebody shut the truck off dead pedal. than would drive normal. Idles great, starts fine and have no codes. The APP was replaced 3 months ago for hesitation at a certain rpm. I have a fuel gauge and is consistent 13 psi cruising and when this dead pedal happens. .



Drove truck yesterday did this about 5 times. After work in the evening drove normal. . still has lots of power.



One question I have also my neighbor gave me a case of Stanodyne that is about 4 years old. . Does this stuff get old and cause a problem? I just started using this stuff about 3 months ago. .



Fuel filter changed every 15k.

Assuming the APPS is still good (likely), and assuming you're taking that fuel pressure reading at the VP44 inlet, then it sounds like the VP44 is failing. With that many miles it's about that time for it to go.



Don't wait to long to replace it... that dead pedal is your warning it's living on borrowed time and it could fail completely at an inconvenient time.

Mine doing the same for a couple of months... mine is the APPS. Waiting to instal an aftermarket from Geno's. Try this. Before turning on key. . Pump fuel pedal 5 or 6 times to get the crud off the sweeper arm inside. Has been working for me. will only stumble occasionally. Good luck

What sweeper arm? Diesels are not like gas engine. Pumping the throttle on the cummins isnt doing a thing.

have you looked on bluechipdiesels web site there is really good info on trouble shooting a vp and such. even without codes good reading

What sweeper arm?

The Throttle Position Sensor (part of the APPS) is a potentiometer. Inside the plastic TPS housing is a wiper arm with a contact point that sweeps across a coil embedded in a circuit board. If comtamination is present on the contact point or coil, "pumping" the accelerator pedal (which causes the contact point to sweep back and forth) can sometimes temporarily improve conductivity and restore normal operation of the TPS. Obviously if you have this sort of problem, then the TPS needs to be replaced.

I talked to Blue chip and Midwest this week. Blue Chip says the computer on the VP is going out. . Midwest thought it was weird that I have no codes and to check for any air getting in and loose connections... he said normally you get a code. .

Well I checked for any leaks and found non... I did changed my Fuel filter even though it only had 10K on it. I also filled my tank again and so far no more dead pedal yet. .

My APP was changed 4 months ago for hesitation at a certain rpm. .

I am thinking maybe I got some bad gas. . (Hoping).

Right now I am waiting on replacing my VP. I am going on a trip in about a week pulling my monster 5th wheel. . so wish me luck. .

Not meaning to scare you, but when my VP44 finally went with a dead pedal, there were no codes. It had been throwing an occasional P0216 (Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure) for some time, but on the day it decided to go... while on vacation out near Death Valley, CA I might add... there was no warning or codes.

Just an update... changed out my APPS from Geno's... . easy replacement. Havent had a stumble in over a week.
