My engine stumbled today and set the check engine light. . This is the first time anything like this has happened in the 4. 5 years I've owned this vehicle. The code set is p1693 nothing else. Is this a sign that the vp44 may be going?

Thanks

The 1693 is just a companion code. There should be another code set. Weird.

Need a little more info.

Have you done any power modifications?

Do you have gauges?

Did you just wash the engine, drive through a deep puddle?

Just filled up the tank?

I have stage 2 injectors and boost module they have been installed since march 01. I did not wash the engine or drive through a puddle. I have a boost and egt combo gauge. The code went away and the check engine light went out the last time I started. What concerns me is the stumble that took place when the code was set. My rig is a 2k with 5 speed

How are you checking for codes? The 3 key turn method or a scanner? The key turn thing has never shown me many codes and usually I've had to hook up a scanner to find out what is really there.

Sounds silly Jim but you ARE waiting until P done and the mileage is diplayed correct? A Mil means a code is ABSOLUTLY set. Was it whildst driving aor idling?

While driving down the highway the engine would stumble/buck and the check engine light would come on. The truck runs fine except for the light being on. When I get to work I turn my key off and on till I get the code in my mileage window. p1693 then --------- then p done then mileage. The third time I start after that the code and check engine lights are gone. This has happened three times this week.

I've had my check engine light on and nothing shows up except 1693, get someone with a code reader to check, you've got something else there too. When I was having some issues nothing would show up on the ODO but was stored in memory.

based *solely* upon my experience... *if* you have stumble *AND* MIL illuminated *AND* tach intermittenet *AND* p1693, a change of cam position sensor is *VERY* likely to resolve issue ($35. 35 at Cummins, plus $8. 70 core)

well it's been happening at least twice a week but today my tach went to zero and stayed there for about a minute while driving down the road. I will replace the cam sensor.

Did you get ahold of a scanner? Ditto the other comments, I've seen only the 1693 code on the odo, but a scanner found p0236 (MAP hi voltage too long). The other code (the right scanner will also give you a freeze-frame of the ECM/PCM parameters when the code set) will DEFINITELY help troubleshoot the prob. My prob ended up being a loose wire to the inj pump (I also gave it a better ground).

Keep the info coming, I think it helps all of us for possible problems and fixes!

Thanks

Jim there is a TSB for the 2000 model truck for engine stumble. It dosn't sound like thats your problem, but you could check your engine serial number and see if it falls into the affected group.
