I am a 1st time poster long time reader and need help.
98. 5 24v 4x4 stock truck. Truck starts fine but when you touch accelerator pedal the engine rpm revs up full throttle and then goes into limp mode.
It started out just once in awhile, clear codes good to go, now ever time.
Generic code reader says 1693,1689,606,600, not all codes every time mostly
1693,1689,606 Cleaned and greased ECM connection. Suspect ECM but do not want to waste money if that is not it
Thanks for any help with this or a good shop in Jacksonville Florida
Scott

Are those "P" codes?

MADS Electronics (AKA Smarty) Smarty03 user guide,

MADS
- Micro Tuner model S-03
1998 – 2002 Dodge Ram
5,9L 24 Valves Cummins Diesel Engine

Instruction manual

appendix B - "DTC codes Interpretation" (begins on page 20) shows:

P0600-PCM FAILURE SERIAL COMMUNICATION LINK
...
P0606-ECM HARDWARE ERROR
...
P1689-NO COMM BETWEEN ECM & INJECTION PUMP MODULE
...
P1693-DTC CLEARED IN COMPANION JTEC MODULE

What do you think guys? APPS? Can't hurt to try the ol reprogram . . . clear codes, disconnect both batteries for 1/2 hour, reconnect, turn key to "on" position, slow push go pedal all the way to the floor, slowly return to top of travel, turn key to "off" position. Then go thru normal start up process. like I said "can't hurt" and it's free too boot.

Thanks for the help! I tried apps once maybe didnt leave the batteries disconnected long enough. I'll try it again. Parts are to much $$$ to just throw them at the problem
Thanks guys

alright I disconnected batteries overnight and reset apps, still have the same problem. Also some odd codes 0A00,7A00,0070
used a generic OBD II reader. I couldn't find a definition for these. Anyone have any ideas????? ECM???
Thanks for the help!!

http://www.rawfactor.com/img/Full List of DTCs.swf

0070 Ambient Air Temperature Circuit
0a00 Motor Electonics Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit

7a00 is not listed there. :(

The only automotive-related article I found referncing obd and 7a00 was:
2004 IMPREZA SERVICE MANUAL
Open or short circuit in Laterl G sensor circuit

I kinda doubt that our trucks even know what a Lateral G sensor is! LOL

You've probably hear the saying about "don't shoot the messenger" (the guy who brings you the bad news) . . well maybe in this case, the news in incorrect and the messenger is lying and needs to be shot!
Anybody know where the obd codes come from? ECM? PCM?

Thanks for the reply. I guess I have to bite the bullet and get a new ECM, anyone know a good source? Has anyone tried the R&R services where they rebuild yours?

it's a needle in a hay stack - a bone yard - but it has to be from same year, cummins, auto or stick I'm pretty sure. What about Marco's MAD ECM

The codes come from the ECM and PCM (that's what code 1693 stands for: DTC detected in ECM or PCM).

Code 1689; No communication between ECM or vp44.

I would check connetors(loose or bent pins)and wires(frayed or broken) going to ECM and vp44. Spray the connetors down with contact cleaner see if that helps.

My truck just did the same thing, the ecm was toast. Dunno why, it just did it all of the sudden. Also my oil pressure gauge quit working. I'd get a dead petal then all the sudden it would redline at 1/4 throttle, then dead petal. I tried a apps and a pcm, still had the same problem. I got a used ecm and that fixed the problem. Seems like a ecm bug is going around I know of 5 trucks that the ecm has gone out of in the last month... . wierd. There's a place in florida that rebuilds ecm's they're on ebay. A lot cheaper than a new one. If I couldn't have found a used one I'd have sent mine to them. Search for cummins ecm on ebay and it should come up.

Corey

On edit. . I cleaned every ground and connection on the truck, to no help. I even added one from the battery to the pcm and tried a temporary one to the ecm to make sure it wasn't a ground. When I swapped ecm's it finally fixed it, it's been 3 weeks, so good so far.

I suffered a 1689 on my truck a long time ago.
It turned out to be the board on the VP44 that was bad. Unfortunately, the only fix available at that time was to replace the VP44. There might be some better options available now though.

I would check the wiring to the ECM, but I doubt this is the issue.

IF it is the APPS,

We are really close to being able have other options than a new dc APPS.

Check the APPS thread that Gary started, we are very very close to having other options.

Got ECM from Bob Wagner and it fixed it. I have been driving a couple days with no issues. It seems like that was the only problem. I have my fingers crossed. Thanks for everyones help!!
