swapped a 2001 into a 1999 body and now I am having issues with no tach and runs ruff.

do I need to change cmp pin on ecu or something?

stealership is saying need to change cam gear for lots of moneys

removing cam is not my favorite idea of fun weekend

has any one else had this problem

hello mh

I just did a similar type swap/ Put a 2000 engine into a 2001 3500 w/auto. Left the wiring harness's w/ each original engine/ Have no tach and at times engine will just shut down like a switch has been flipped w/out warning/ Upon restart there will be no lift pump activation or pressure thus I assume the signal to start engine has been interupted electronically/

There is one 3 wire inline male plug that I cannot fine a home for located just below the fass DDRP lift pump behind the starter/ Starter removed for clarity/ Will try to post pics/ Dont know If this connector is related to tachometer or not/ Any an all input greatly appreciated/TIA

Wire colors appear to be (Brown w/white stripe),(Black), (Light yellow or Pale green).

Oh... only code thrown is P 1693 as read thru odom

98. 5-00 uses the crank sensor to control tach. amd also has a cam sensor but not the same as a 01-02. . the later only has a cam sensor that has a tone ring. if you drop a 98. 5-00 in the later all you would have to do is put a 01-02 cam gear and timing housing from the late on it too. they are different and it will work. might also try to use the wiring harness with ecm and pcm from the motor that came from the donor truck.

99 has a tone ring mounted to the crankshaft where the crank sensor(behind Starter) would pick up the engine running signal. The 99 has a cam sensor but is not involved in the engine operation, it is there for diagnostics only. The 01 used the cam sensor exclusively and probably does not have the mounting holes for the tone ring on the crank. The options are few and the only one I know of mechanically is to install a 99 crank with the tone ring for the sensor to pick up. There may be other, wiring harness,ECM,PCM changes but I do not know the sequence you would have to go thru. If you do get it working electrically let us know as I believe this has come up before. The reason I know this much is when my 53 block cracked the local Cummins dealer installed the new short block that did not have the tone ring. They had to tear it down again and install my old crank. The shop guy said to convert it to the cam sensor was quite involved.

Thank you for your posts guys, they were very helpfull/ Replaced the ckp sensor behind the starter into the side of the block and plugged in the mysterious plug as shown above/ I got my tach back and no more hard starts/ No more shut downs w/out warning and the engine runs strong/Thats today, hopefully all is well tomorrow/ W
