engine temp and thermostat

The question is this: I see large swings on my stat, like 170 to 210, and when I combine this with towing seems to make it worse. When towing, on a steep grade, my engine seems to lose power. I have edge ez. Seems like a predictable loss, so is it the computer trying to stay cool?

Check your T-stat... . it might be stuck open. Mine doesn't move hardley ever.

Other members are saying...

go witht he "Cummins" 180deg stat. Fuel mileage actually goes up(?) by 1/2 MPG and the temp swings stop.

I have about 10K miles on the new Cummins 180* thermostat, it replaced the 180 that came in the truck. I see bigger temp swings now than before. The old 180 was steady as a rock after the first cycle of the T-stat. Mine now swings from 160-185 anytime there is a load on it at all. The first couple swings are higher, but then it settles to a steady swing.





A new thermostat is needed if you are seeing 210 empty IMO, just don't expect the swing to go away completely.
