I've seen the temp gage in my truck climb above 200 (maybe 205-210) when running at slow speeds on steeper grades unloaded. Under normal highway driving even up steep mountain passes, the temp usually stays to the left of center on the gage (190-195). This is my first diesel truck ('04 with about 9K miles). The temp gage in my previous gas trucks never moved much under all operating conditions so I was curious if this is normal.

Sounds about right. These motors need a lot of air too keep them cool. You should never see much over that (215-220), if you do, something may be wrong with your cooling system.

At high altitude and big grades, you must expect a higher temperature. If the cooling system is able to cope with normal driving, then I'd say you've got no problem. It's just the slow speeds combined with high altitude and steep terrain that puts a strain on the system. No worries. Remember, your cooling system won't reach the boiling point until 240 at least! :)

My truck runs either dead on the center line or just under while empty. While pulling steep grades loaded it will move to a fraction above the half way mark... . Never goes above that. Elevations are around 5,000 ft.

Mine does the same thing. Interestingly, I noticed last weekend that it stayed below 200 when I turned the AC on. I was towing my 30' toyhauler. Does turning the AC on lock up the fan earlier?
