my brother has a 97 5 spd 2500 his temp gets up to 190 then drops to 140 and stays there a while then climbs and falls is this just the thermastat is it a problem is it normal ??

Sounds like you have a sticking thermostat. I had one do the same thing, every once in a while it would stick, and cycle the same way. Went to Cummins dealer and got a replacement thermostat and never had another promblem. Good luck.

I had the same trouble with mine when i first got the truck last winter. Did a napa t stat and had the same symptom cycling 140 to 190 every few min. So i get the improved t stat from cummins and get it in and its the same cycling as before. I have learned to live with it. I have a friend with a 97 and his does it to.

Mine kept doing this too, I tried several thing, differant t stats and all. .

I drilled a little bigger hole in the flat , around 1/8 inch and now, it comes up to temp and stays steady, as long as the temp guage is working...
