A friend of mine just bought 2004 doge ram ctd and the dealership cannot figure out why it will not heat up , it will get about 140* and thats it, the truck runs like total crap and bad fuel mileage. They have replaced the temp sensor and 3 thermostats and still no answer. Any ideas on what to do? They have also covered up the radiator completely and still no change. Maybe they should of bought a 6. 0 and have no problems. Any ideas will be very helpful.

put a load behind the truck and pull it hard. that will get it warmed up. if he is driving around unloaded in the cold tempratures that have been around, the engine will not get

up to operating temp unless you get a head wind on the highway doing ±120kph

my truck, on the drive to work, the temp gauge just barely moves off the peg at the low end of the scale [60°C for me]

*edited*

oh, and covering the rad won't do too much eh. the trucks engine has a 180°F [iirc?] thermostat, and if it isn't getting near that point, the thermostat will not open, and there will be no flow through the rad.

if he wants a 6. 0 psd, more power to him, just have him read about the engine problems ford is having with them over on the http://www.thedieselstop.com forums under 6. 0 psd engine/drivetrain.

We need more information to give better advice on what might be wrong. Is this guy actually driving the truck long enough in cold temps to get it to heat up?

Is the fan stuck on?

My friend had the gooseneck livestock trailer behind his truck today with with 20 cows at roughly 1000 pounds a piece and drove it 15 miles and still no change in temperature. The dealer called him today and they want to sell him an electric fan, to solve his problem. Any other ideas. Truck 2004 crew cab auto 3500 srw, with 2000 miles on it.

Dumb question, but maybe the gauge is bad.

Either way, the dealer should be "selling" him anything. They should be fixing the problem.

15 miles towing cows should bring it up to temp. I'd say something is wrong somewhere.

What the he!! would installing an electric fan do for a truck that won't get up to temperature? That's gotta be the dumbest idea I've ever heard, unless I'm missing something here.

Reading the service manual, page 7-56, there are a number of things the dealer should be checking with the engine fan. First of all, the DRB-III can monitor fan speed and duty cycle. Insufficient fan speed will set a DTC, but excessive fan speed won't (apparently). Check for leaks near the drive bearing. Manual says some stains are okay, but excessive leakage means a new viscous drive assembly.

Has the dealer done any of this? I suppose, on the other hand, that if the fan were on all the time you'd know it (noise!).

It's been pretty cool in Iowa lately, and it's been cold here also here in Nebr, my truck seldom achieves over 1/3rd above cold with the radiator covered. I drove to Denver last month in I-80 at 80 mph when it was 60 DEGF out and the radiator was covered also and it never got above normal. I'd rather have 'em run cold than hot. I do get kinda worried driving down I-80 when it's -15 out, I just hope they mixed the fuel good enough!

Three thermostats, hmmm... . Who is they? This situation sounds impossible. I would have removed the thermostat myself after the first one was changed and boiled it to see where it opened at. If they is the dealer and your not able to remove and test the thermostat yourself. Then take it to Cummins.

Good Luck
