I changed the oil and filled the filter too. When I started up there was one tick/knock. I dont know diesels at all for where parts are. As oil got circulating the sound decreased to where now I can hear over the general diesel rattle. The dealer just says its going too. I think its more then just rattle. Should I be concerned?

Not being able to hear what you hear, I would say you do need to be concerned. With that said, I would suggest you try a fuel additive such as Stanadyne or Lucas. Sometimes the pump is noisy and a fuel additive with good lubricant properties will quieten it down. I didn't see a signature so I don't know how old your truck is. I'm assuming it is a 24 valve with the VP44. Mine was quite loud and sounded like it was knocking when it was new. I started using the additive and it quietened down on the first tankful. These pumps are lubricated by the fuel only so fresh lube oil doesn't help them any.

What kind of oil are you using? Do you know what you had?

Oil pressure OK

The oil pressure goes to 60 on the gauge and after is 35 to 40 at idle. Seems to be about 5 lower then when the factory oil was in. I changed at 3100 miles, now I'm just over 6200 miles and is getting dark but can still see thru.

KIND of ( type )

I used the Delo 400 and the fleetguard filter with the stra-- Something or other the receipt is packed in the glove box and its a blizzered out side ( north of Reno, Nv. ). Got the filter from Cummins dealer in town for 8. 00 and change.

Did you fill the filter with oil when you changed it? If not, the noise is no oil going to vital engine parts while the filter fills.

Good point Paul. It sounds like the noise is continuing. Strange that it only started with the oil change. I know for the first 10,000 miles, my engine was pretty noisy. Lots of knocking/ticking and then it just seemed to finish breaking in and get the real Cummins sound. If the oil filter wasn't filled that usually only makes noise for a few seconds till the pressure comes up. I've never really thought about it... ... . Aren't these solid lifters? There would be noise with them but not the clacking like hydraulic lifters make before they "pump up" after an oil change. If it is a loud ticking, I'm wondering if the valves might have not been adjusted properly from the factory. Might be worth having them checked. With 24 of them coming on line with startup, a few misadjusted might be a little noisy.

More info

I actually filled the filter up too full and had to take enough out to get to tip just enough to tread on. If you were to loosen a rocker arm on a gas engine that had a stud and you tightened a nut the tick knock is like that. It was also like a lifter had to pump up but the sound didnt go all away. It is only at 1 spot, 1 tick/knock. This is weird but in the cab and at 35 mph with engine warm and oil gauge up is can be heard more.

I'm sure there is a Cummins dealer around Reno. You may stop by, pick up a couple of fuel filters and ask them to listen to it for you. The dealer here is pretty good about giving "free" advice to customers as long as it's not too involved.
