I have 80,000 miles on the truck now (1996) and have done nothing to the engine but filters and oil changes. Oh, and a new belt. Is there anything else I should do as far as a "tune up". What's this I hear about timing? Should I have it checked or assume since its running fine, leave it alone. I know, I know never assume!

Yes JJP you could have injector pump timed but as 1tuffram stated better to have valves checked first.
Timing should not be a issue for a while.
Check archives on injector pump timing. There should be a post why it should be timed. As I recall something about valves wearing down.

JJP:
Take a little advice and take it to a Cummins shop for the timing but the valve's you can do easy. On mine a 9/16 in. box end and a screwdriver. Set at . 010 intake and . 020 exhaust. There are post that give the order in which to adjust or look in the manual.
Easy to keep up with.

Sorry guys, you've been misinformed, I missed the 25,000 mile valve adjustment but they did finally get done at 70,000 miles. Thanks for the info.

Other suggestions based on common problems found thoughout the TDR:

- Get the fuel pressure checked. Checks clogged filters, lift pump and the ever popular overflow valve.
- If you dont have a boost gauge, get one temp hooked up and get to make sure you get full boost. Checks turbo, wastegate problems, and boost leaks.
- At that mileage, blindly replace the fuel return line at the next fuel filter change.
