Engine upgrade

Has anyone done an engine upgrade (swap) from 2002 into a '98? What will I need to know? I may get the opportunity to upgrade from my tired 1998 1/2 Cummins to a 2002 Cummins from a wreck.

Reason:- I have driven my tired engine over 1,164,000 kilometers (about 700,000 miles), and it has slowly developed unhealthy rapping and knocking sounds, rough starting (probably uneven compression), and low oil pressure. A new injection pump and injectors did not help very much. It has always had prompt and proper maintenance, regular oil changes, etc. I know that it should have lasted longer, and many have, but not all engines are created equal. I need to decide whether to swap engines, or get a short block.

May want to post this in the 24v engine forum. Will get more vistors this way.



If you go this route, with those miles, I'd probably get a long block, over a short. This is unless you want to turn up the power, and get a ported/polished head elsewhere. The head I'm sure would need some attention, too.



What kind of shape is the used engine in? It may be worth swapping in. You may need to get the ECM for that engine also.
