I had a starting issue yesterday on my 2007 5.9, the truck had been running fine all day except when I tried to move it out of the driveway, it just would not crank, dash lights
were on battery was good, it was completely dead when I turned the key, I lifted the hood to see if anything was loose, but it was good. Anyway about five minutes later it
started. I have heard it may be a key problem, and removing the IOD fuse then replacing it re-sets it. I don't know but was wondering if anyone else had had a similar problem.

Recently a friend of mine's 2007 truck with an auto transmission had the same symptoms. He had to have it towed, then the next day it started fine and continued to do so thereafter.

I performed a voltage drop test to verify battery and wiring performance - all was good, including the starter cranking speed. I removed the starter (thinking of worn contacts) and found out that the starters in 2007 and newer trucks are completely different than previous years. No easy way to service the contacts, at least with my limited knowledge.

I rigged up a jumper switch and showed the owner how to jumper from the positive battery post to the small terminal on the starter as a troubleshooting technique to find out if the starter was the culprit should the problem arise again.

The symptoms never resurfaced again, but a few weeks later when he had the transmission serviced, the shop replaced the neutral safety because there was oil in the electrical contact area.

This might be a place to look if everything else checks out okay.

Check the shifter indicator to see if there is a indication that it is in park when you turn the key to the start position. If there isn't one, it will not start. Turn key off, move shifting lever, turn key to start position and check to see if it says it is in park.
