Bridgeway Cummins just explained to me that I need a new engine wiring harness. I have bad wires on the datalink between the ecm and the injector pump, along with others. Are these very expensive?

Has any body had this repair done before?

Help Please?

Wiring Harness

Can't help with cost but have you thought about trying to get it covered under warranty if not under the 3/36 but maybe as part of the 5 year emissions ?

It is possible you have bad wires; If so, you need a new harness. However, it might not be bad wires. it could be bad connectors.

Merrick Cummings (mcummings) has had a similar problem. It is likely the male-female connectors at either the ECM or the VP44. The 'fingers' on the female connector probably are not making a very good connection. If you are having pump 'cut-out' like problems, this could be it. Next time it happens, try pushing the pins on the connectors (push the wires, perhaps) in to the VP44 or ECM. If that 'cures' the problem, you *might* be able to use a fine needle and reshape the female connectors so they make better contact.

In any case, good luck with it!

Thanks,

I had the engine wire harness repalced by Bridgeway Cummins, they swore to me that it was the harness. Now, they have invested 6 hrs of labor and a $380 wire harness and the problem not changed in the least bit.

Now they are telling me it is the injector pump. They have had my truck since last Monday, April 14, and now Monday, April 21, they still have no idea what is wrong with my truck.

This is becoming very upseting, D/C employees people who want to fill it up with gas and change the spark plugs and Cummins only wants to hang parts, not diagnose what is wrong with my truck.

Sounds like you didn't have my problem,, (BTW, 1 year ago I had the same problems you did, or close to them, and all I did was push in on the ECM wires, and my truck has been running fine since then)

Cutting out hard @ 2,600 RPM? Cummins reflashed the ECM??

Sounds like they may have put an RV program in the truck accidently.

It might possibly be a VP44, but before you plunk down that goodly amount of change,, I would have them re-flash the computer with a DODGE program. . not a Cummins re-flash. (As odd as it sounds)

Cummins in RV's/Firetrucks/2 ton trucks/etc. use a redline in the 2,600 RPM area. Maybe a little ECM/PCM/VP44 controls, mis-communication turns redline into a cutting out symptom.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I already asked Bridgeway that same question. They said if it was goverened to 2,600, it would just stop at that rpm and stay there. When my truck hits 2,600 it stops running and returns to an idle then speeds up again, also it creates DTC 1689. For Cummins, it creates similar but other codes. Part of the problem was there was a short in the engine wire harness between pin 13 and 23 on the 50 pin block to pins 1 and 2 on the PECM connector on the VP 44. These pins are the + and - of the datalink, they are a non-grounded shielded pair of wires with 2 twists-per-inch. They control the processor on the VP44. When they shorted out, it took out the injector timing ability of the computer on the pump.

Our ECM will only take the Dodge Reflashes, not Cummins Reflashes. Cummins has the ability to reflash the ECM, but only with the D/C software upgrades.

Thanks for the thought,

-Rich
