HELP, I went to shut off the engine and it keep running. So I let the clutch out to try to kill it, and it started right up again, it was then that realized that the starter was running continuously and the stater gear was bouncing off of the flywheel (surprised that didn't make more noise). I popped the hood, grabbed a 12" adjustable wrench, now a hammer, from behind the seat, and smacked the starter a couple of quick blows and it stopped running. I shut the key off and the engine quit. Everything seems normal now, but I would hate to have it happen again! When I originally shut the engine off, I may have let the clutch out to soon and caused the engine to buck a little. Was this the start of my problem? Any ideals would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Rusty Mule,

Starter run on is a common occurence and first sign that contact points in starter solenoid are wearing out especially the battery side contact.

Good news they can replaced. You can try to buy one or two and plunger if you think you need it (plunger washer can be wire brushed to clean it up) from local auto electric shop or there is a shop in Arizona just south of Colorado that will ship contacts or contacts and plunger. You can do search there are many post with name ( I think Diesel Electric) and phone number of the business.

Usually starter run on happens right after engine fires up. Driver will hear a whirring sound which is the starer gear still engaged in the fly wheel and overrun clutch doing overtime.

Mine did it a couple of times but would shut itself off after a minute or two. The last time it did it I used an old method of letting clutch in and out in 5th gear to knock the starter gear back into starter reversing the start sequence killing power to starter motor.

Engine run on can also occur when the fuel shut off solenoid system acts up. ( fuel shut off solenoid, fuel shut off relay, wiring and connectors. ) This can occur with/with out help from another component.

Because of contact points arching or plunger getting cockeyed/stuck in starter solenoid power is backed tracked to the FSO solenoid which is why the engine won't shut down.

Fix it now because occasionally fuel shut off solenoid gets fried.
